Hey Chaps.....
please talk to me about these apps.
I want one that people can follow me while i ride, and there are so many out there... which is the best?

The bottomline is that there are various options, but as soon as you go out of cell reception ( in other words 3g connection)
the tracking is non-existant.

Agreed, but as far as i understand, some apps cont to track via GPS and then when you get into reception it updates the entire track as well as the current- real-time position.....

I use glympse to let people know not only where I am, but where I'm going. Great for keeping swambo happy when I'm out riding, but also when you're meeting friends somewhere it gives them your ETA. Good for when you're on the bike and can't answer a "how long will you be" phone call.

Realtime GPS Tracker works well on Android.

If the person monitoring your progress is not tech savvy, stick with simple, ie. Google+. This is good for families, as its always tracking. Will not show your track, only last known location. But its a place to start the search.

Downloaded and tested Glympse, works very well. I will be using it around town.

Pro's
You can only track someone by invitation - privacy
You can set a time limit to a Glympse - privacy
You can track destination and ETA

Con's
You can only track someone by invitation, if you are not able to request/approve the Glympse, you cannot be tracked.
If the Glympse expired before the wheels came off you may be very far from last known location.

I just installed Ant Mobile on my S4. Seems to do everything you would want. However my tablet shows I'm in the middle of the sea . Maybe because I'm still indoors...

Hi Bonova

We tracked a few riders at Amageza last year using various apps.

The best by a long way was the iPhone App used by Kamanya. It updated regularly and predictably when in range. When it went out of range it cached and dumped the cache when it got back in range. It worked well, and I gather did not use that much data.

For the Android devices, we used Greenalp (http://www.greenalp.com/RealTimeTracker/)
It worked fairly well. Setup required authorization from both parties, but that is not such a bad idea. Performance was OK, but not as good as the Apple app. Updates were a bit erratic at times, and although it cached when out of range the cache dump was not as slick. It is however free for tracking up to five devices.

The best coverage was from the deLorme inReach satellite tracker. Updates are sent only every 10 minutes, but it is satellite based and has true global coverage. The device itself costs around R3000, and requires a data plan subscription which is not exactly cheap. It worked exactly as advertised, and Amageza plans to use one of these for each rider this year.

If you have an Iphone, this is the one to have. Cheap, slick and very good.

It has 4 "modes" that ranges from realtime and a battery eater, to a low battery chomper.

I used reatime and when in cell reception, it is absolutely real time. When out of reception it just, as stated above cached the route and then downloaded as soon as cell reception was picked up again.

On a full battery, I think in realtime mode the phone lasted 3 or 4 hours. I have an on-bike charging system and used that alot.

Anyone can follow if they have the link that the phone creates when a new route is created.

Big bonus was, when I was expecting a monster data bill, that I think the tracking for the whole 3 days came to less than R50.
