Newbie Roadtrip
« on: January 25, 2014, 01:54:41 pm »
Having read some of the other posts I feel under pressure to post and share my 1st Roadtrip

Took delivery of my F800GS on 11 Dec'13 and thought it best to get some kms under the belt before venturing off-road in 2014.

With some good advice from the Forum I invested in a soft bag at Flying Brick and headed out on 3rd Jan. Battled a bit with the Gopro which had been left to gather dust for the previous 18 months so didn't get any pics for the fisrt leg from Cape Town via Betty's Bay, Hermanus, Stanford and Gansbaai to Swellendam

Unfortunately the staff at the Backpackers were rather unfriendly so I've taken this stop of my list for future trips.

Day 2 I headed for Koedoeskloof, but first aimed for 7 Weeks Poort.

Got my first speeding fine in Ladysmith for doing 78 in a 60km/h zone :-( But on the upside I met a Dutchman (a real one from the Netherlands) in 7 Weeks Poort. Jaap had just completed a 3 month trip through Africa on his KTM and had chosen to spend his last 3 days exploring the Klein Karoo. I invited him to join me at Koedoeskloof.

That's him on the bottom right of the pic. Jaap shared some videos shot during his trip south. The fact that he is a professional cameraman added to the quality and definetely motivated myself and the other guests at Koedoeskloof to tackle longer routes in future.

I have to thank Debra and Eugene at Koedoeskloof for their amazing hospitality. Great venue that must be highly recommended!

Day 3 next

Day 3 I headed from Koedoeskloof to Stilbaai via Riversdale and Vermaaklikheid. Although this is a gravel road it was dry and hard packed. Pretty much like a tar road and easy going for a newbie.

Stayed at the Stilbaai Backpackers above Puffie's Bar. Nice venue but not recommended if you want an early night. If you can't beat them you have to join them. Experienced a lovely sunset from the front stoep at the Backpackers.

And explored the back roads around Stilbaai before I headed to Gouritzmouth along the gravel coastal road.

The morning started out a little damp but I didn't expect it to rain to much. I got in one last pic before the skies opened...

The next 2 days were wet! But I got a brief opportunity to pass through Meiringspoort and get a pic before I headed to De Rust for my overnight stop.

2 Days later people had to be airlifted out of Meiringspoort due to the heavy rain and floods!

After a brief stop in Oudtshoorn for breakfast I headed for George. I had decided that I would not push my luck as a newbie on gravel roads so would leave Swartberg and Die Hel for a future trip.

I also though that I would be ok with my Cat Boots and cargo pants. The rains coming down sorted all of that out. Soaked to the bone and with water shloshing (!) around in my boots as I headed across the pass into George my immediate objective was to find a bike shop that stocked quality safety gear. In particular boots and trousers.

Didn't take any pics of George, but found the Yamaha shop. I seem to recall the owner being Hennie, but I could be wrong. An hour later I had donated my Cat boots to their charity drive and left properly kitted out ;-)

My last overnight stop was at Wild Spirit Lodge in Natures Valley.

I had planned to stay in my tent, but owing to the heavy rains I went for Plan B and spent the night in a mixed dorm with 11 19y/o German tourists. A new experience for me, which I don't think I will repeat soon if I don't have to.

After a quick visit down the hill to Nature's Valley

I tackled the long road home. It turned out to be a good decision as the rain that fell the past 3 days were nothing compared to what was about to come.

This was a great trip! Met some amazing likeminded individuals and realised that I would rather do future trips with company. If I had any doubt about buying a F800GS they're gone. I am totally addicted ;-)

Looking forward to the Country Trax Off road courses in February and March.

Where to next?

Really nice RR Zack. Wild Spirit and Gansbaai backpackers are cool places. Pity about Swellendam Backpackers. Stephanie the owner can be a bit otherwise!!!!

Thanks for all the encouraging replies to my post.

Great ride, thanks for posting, yes you just missed the heavy rains so good call to return home. What rain kit did you buy?

I got a pair of A-M-A Riding Boots. Not to costly with nice ankle protection and a waterproof membrane. The trousers are DMDs. Also not to costly with a waterproof membrane.

These 2 items, added to the DMD Jacket I bought before the trip changed the experience of biking in the wet weather from being miserable back to being completely enjoyable.

Hi Dudley, Thanks. I am fortunate to have "grown up" in the outdoors and have learnt to take care of myself. It was a different experience on a bike though. I would recommend that you join "forces" with someone else. Be warned though -- After your first Road Trip there will be no turning back. I have started planning the next one. Aiming to do mostly gravel the next one.
