Will it be a stupid idea?
« on: February 07, 2014, 10:10:00 am »
Hey guys

Don't know if I am actually going mad or if this is only a crazy idea. My FIL has an old Yamaha AG175 (looks like pre 1979) on the farm which probably has not moved for the last 10 years or so. Luckily it is standing in a garage. So was kept away from the elements in this time.

I was thinking to ask my FIL if I can "save" this bike and fix it up for myself to use as a commuter. I know this thing is very slow being a farm bike and all, but this will be my first bike (plus I do less than 20km a day). So might be good to learn on. Obviously I will first find out why the bike has been standing for so long before I commit. Also still unsure of parts availability and cost. Just know that the AG175 apparently have a few parts in common with a CT3.

So I was thinking this can probably cost me over R10k to fix, but in the process I will have the joy of learning something new and in the end a "classic" bike that I fixed up myself.

The other option is boring and predictable. This would be to just buy a second hand xr125 or similar and just use that.

So opinions please and advice.

(bike is similar to the on in the attached picture)

Yes, but who cares  Of course you take it and fix it up, even only just to do it and you never use it  :thumleft: The satisfaction is priceless.

Daai AG's is so taai kanse is baie goed hy benodig net n carbclean en petrol
en n harde skop en daar gaan jy.
Ek reken dit kan baie "koel" wees veral in die somer om met hom te commute veral
daar op die rand van die hel waar julle woon. :eek7:

Manakwalanner, the AG175 and 1973 175 CT3 have all engine parts interchangable. The AG's, like Chris said, are very tough and reliable, just keep the oil tank topped up.
They will make excellent short-distance commuters, since the cruise happiest at about 80 to max 100kmph.

Still get it's parts from it's parents. :thumleft:

Sounds like positive replies is not what you were looking for. You want someone to talk you out of it.
So listen to me, don't do it. It's a bloody stoopid idea.  >:D

BTW, how much does the FIL want for it?

Soooo.....

Went to skoonpagoed. He says I can have the bike. Only one problem though. He is the second owner of the bike. Shortly after he got it the engine seized and he had someone fix it. 10k or 15k km later it seized again. This time it was completely redone including the oil pump. He also added some two stroke oil straight to the petrol this time round. Another 10k km or so later and it seized again. After the second time he left it as is.

Body wise the bike looks OK. So it might just need some cleaning. The part I am most concerned about is the engine. I don't want to fix it up just to seize again after a year or two.

What do think? Did the previous guys who worked on it miss something obvious? Would I be able to prevent the seizing if I use the correct oil (assuming that the oil used in it was not of the correct rating)? What needs to be done for the rebuild? Another slight problem might be registering it, but that is not a big concern at this stage.

Possibly dirt in the oil feed line, which was never cleaned out.

I bought a "problem child" RD400 once. The previous owner has redone the engine 3 times, first time it was a seizure, and the two other times it burnt a hole in the RH piston.
I found out that after the seizure, they actually found dirt in the oil line to the LH cylinder, and cleaned the oil feed lines out. Then it holed the RH piston twice.
Using a dial guage I measured TDC and FTDC on both cylinders, and found that the RH cylinder fired with the piston 3 instead of about 2mm BTDC.

With the seizure of the LH cylinder, the engine stopped so abruptly that the built-up crank twisted somewhat.

Sorry if this sounds ignorant, but is this good news or bad news to me? Obviously I am going to have to strip everything and clean it very meticulously in the hope that I don't get the same issues again.

Would I be able to strip and rebuild the engine with help from a workshop manual (that I do not have) and without too many specialized tools? Or should I just have the "bigger" jobs looked at by a professional?

Good shop manual, and zero specialised tools, EXCEPT that I would have the timing marks verified by a knowledgable person.
Then clean and adjust Autolube pump correctly. Check cylinder to bore clearance after reboring, the very quick seizures indicate tight bore/oil starvation.
