Just put a C23 on front and a 130/80 18 E09 on rear & heading to Richtersveld tomorrow - will let you know how it goes. The 140 E09 is actually a bit big for the 690 and eats the chain guard. At first looks the 130 looks very thin, but I'll withhold judgement till I've tried it...

That combination is what I'm running on my bike at the moment, rear 150 though. The E09 lasts well for what it is. But for proper technical RR type riding the Dessert gives better grip but not longevity.

Thanks so far for the replies. :thumleft:

Not worried to much about longevity -  would like performance choices/views first

What distance would you like to get from the tyre?

Iím testing a E09 rear on my wr450 rally currently and it is holding up so far, nice tyre

Michelin dessert race front and back is a no brain'r but pricey
So much of win it hurts! ^.^

I run E09 on my 1190 (for off-road) and although they are good tyres and last well they are not quite aggressive enough for my intended use...

Have a look at the Mitas C02 for the rear

Could you maybe clarify what you mean by

rally raid / aggressive off-road type riding

For me that bill means as a requirement:

I want hard as fuck sidewalls, the kinda you can ride on at a lower speed if you have a flat.
Rubber compond that has flex at the tips of the tred but not soft enough to fall apart as soon as I open the throttle in a panic and still provide tactile feedback.
Last at least 1500km per rear

So what is your intended use?

I'm surprised nobody suggests the mitas e10 dakar, exept the poor mileage its a great tyre in the ruff stuff. Sidewall is is as tough as nails, not sure if you do get a flat if you will be able to get the tyre off though.

Pirelli MT21 front - works well on all terrains.

From what I have read, the MT21 rear is a very good offroad tire. Not so good on the tar apparently.

Where is GJ? He will tell you what works on the rear.

The intended use of my 690 - Is riding terrain like de Wildt,  Alfie Cox Dirt Festival red and Blue loops , Rally raid events (such as the one on the east coast), but not competitive stuff like the Amageza (for now) - very little to no tar.

The 90/21's move but the 17' & 18' only to guys who are prepared to sacrifice longevity for performance. If heatsealed nicely the E10 rears actually have potential much like TKC80's.
