690 Alternative oil
« on: February 24, 2014, 09:42:15 pm »
I know this has being discussed to death. I think the spec oil for the 690 s 10w 60.

In the heat of KZN and doing more technical riding , is it better use us 10w 60, or 10w 50w?

As the 10w50 Castrol is a tad cheaper than Motrex?

stick to the motorex - the 60w vs the 50w means it handles heat slightly better (but 50 should be fine - the 60 will just give better protection) - motul also quite good but use the fully synthetic stuff

do not use any car oil - the additives could lead to clutch slip etc

Spec says 10W60 or alternatively 10W50 fully synthetic... but really, you have to ask yourself - do you think this is a good place to save money? Personally, I put in the best oil I can get... these are very high performance motors working flat out - a few rands saved here and there is short term economy, IMHO.

During December I found 690 on gravelroad between Niks an Nowhere(Paardekloof and Van Wyksdorp).  Biker lost oil due to hole, fixed with steelglue and used farmers tractor 15W40 oil to travel the 80 km to Oudtshoorn.   In emergency any oil is the best!

I actually like Caltex Delo Gold oil for bike usage.  I buy it in 20 l barrels from my Ko-op.  If I cannot find Motul, I would use this in a heartbeat over stuff like Belray Thumper or Castrol Actveo.  You don't have to, though... O0
