I like it a lot
Too much horsepower is just enough

I would not buy a new one though as it is a very niche market and new owners will take a hiding on resale value like they did with 950SM
Wait for a second hand one and save 50K

Just come back from test riding one (de Waal drive, through Newlands forest, over Ou Kaapseweg, Chapmans peak, the coast road to Bakoven over Kloofnek back to Paardeneiland).  This is one neat bike!  Add a slightly noisier pipe to it and it will be even better.  I kept my shorty Wings pipe from the 1190 and will fit that once I get the bike.

The one thing that I did not like is that the traction can only be switched off at full stop and resets itself when you switch the engine off.  That is just a pain.  Hopefully the right dongle will come out to fix this flaw.  It is not that you will be faster with it off but, when the throttle gets twisted, it should just insanely leap forward and not take control away from you.  Having said that, when my son will ride it I am happy that it will interfere and limit youthful enthusiasm.

It makes you grin big time.  Unfortunately the roads are almost always too busy.  But, that is what we have track days and Monday/Tuesday afternoon open practice at Killarney for.  However, when you tootle through the traffic it is very well behaved and easy to get along with.

Someone made a comment about wind protection on these types of bikes.  Because of the traffic there was no high speed riding but at 140 into the South Easter there was no strain/buffeting whatsoever.  In fact, it is a lot less tiring than my XR650L at 120 without any wind.

I am sure all the fans of this bike want to see a hooligan wheely pic, Amsterdam, not a GS1200 scenic type picture. :peepwall:

Ai, hoe naief tog........... :imaposer:

The true test will be to see the times at Killarney.

I would also like to see one on Wrensch's dyno, bet it's only about 10HP more than the 1190, which at 150 is also overrated.

If the 1190 made 150HP, did you really believe that KTM found a 30HP/100cc somewhere? :imaposer:

Amsterdam is an ex racer at Killarney so his lap times won't be shabby at all .
30hp/100cc , yip , very possible , all depends on the state of tune .

But do you know what is so lekker about Oom Dan is that he is so easy to bait , just mention anything anti Yamaha and he bites .   :pot: :pot:

Well, Amsterdam, the challenge is out I guess, it is up to you to ASAP go and do some WD investigative riding and testing regarding Killarney laptimes on a 1290.

I would guess at least 5 secs a lap slower than an R1?

Any other estimates?

Who is gonna ride it ? I will probably fall off on the first corner - am much better at K on 4 wheels

If you are serious about lap times then we need at least one other, if not a few, bikes at the same time to compare it against - and the same rider needs to ride all the bikes for the same amount of laps to set each bike's best lap time

Are you up for so much action in one day ? You are mos Danie van Killarney ...

The older I get the faster I was

My opinion is that they will stop production of these hooligan bikes and many will be crashed, the ones left will become highly collectable around the world. Mine due end of March.

I'll ride it and compare the lap times against what I get on the ZX10R.  I am no lap record breaker but will give me an indication.  Of course, the launch was held at Killarney last week so I am sure next months bike magazines will all have lots of info plus lap times.  I know Robert Portman was there so his times would be a much better reference.

It will take a while before my report back is here.  Still waiting for the bike.

And nope, I am not Danie van K.

Too much hp is enoug and the only hurdle for most of us is money who unfortunately can only agffort one bike. I love this style of 'monster street bikes' and although way down in HP would also love a ride on the MV Agusta Brutale that features in this months bike SA. Like AMsterdam said, the KTM is actually quite ridable in traffic and the KTM engineers have therefore done their homework. Unlike some other models which was almost unridable in normal day to day commuting and so on (speak of other manufacturers here as well like the ZX9 at a few years back which I owned) However, when you need the performance she answeres!!! Keep us posted and don't be shy with photos

IT IS SO COOL

Definitely way cooler than a R6, cooler than any Ducati or Ferrari - in fact I think it's cooler than a polar bear's nutsack stuck to an iceberg
