VERY iNTERESTING . . . . .
This is how SHELL responded after a mail regarding the pump attendant's request this morning -

Were you ever asked to dismount your motorcycle when filling with petrol?
This is the policy at SHELL -
The reason for doing this is for YOUR own safety first & foremost and here is why:
•        A motorcycle arriving on a forecourt for fuel is usually at full operating temp, meaning the engine directly below the tank is a super source of ignition should some fuel get spilt. Furthermore, on most bikes, the CDI and battery/electrics/fuse boxes are located directly under the saddle which is exactly where the overflow fuel will be heading. (together with the riders crotch area of course)
•        Overfills can happen if the pump attendant is not paying attention, I have seen riders getting sprayed with fuel all over when attendants don’t pay attention to what they’re doing and I’ve seen riders who like to fill their own bikes while seated do this to themselves as well.
•        In winter, all the rider gear (ATTGATT) can become very static and the vapors from the open tank directly in front of a mounted rider can very easily be ignited especially when the nozzle comes into contact with the metal of the tank.  Should you be wearing any cordura type jacket/pants this will burn like plastic into your skin in no time and make an awful mess for a plastic surgeon to cut you loose from.
•        So the main reason for dismounting when filling the bike, is to remove the customer from a potential source of ignition and as such mediate the risk associated.
Having the bike on the side stand when filling will obviously leave the bike not filled to the brim, but generally not at only 75% of capacity.  Ideally the bike should be put on a centre-stand for filling but we know most sports bikes don’t have them and in this case, the rider can even hold the bike upright if you absolutely have to get the last few mills of fuel in the tank.
We put customer and staff safety 1st and our aim is that everyday all customers and staff go home to the families unharmed.
