Seen on 4x4 Community thread, it seems that petrol station are not accepting SA cards (cheque/credit) anymore due to bank Nam moaning about the fee's between Nam and RSA.
So, as risky as it is, it seems you will have to carry some cash with you from now on.
They have started a list, and here is an updated list that accepts cards (cheque/credit)
Nedbank Merchants accepting Visa and MasterCard Debit, Cheque and credit cards for fuel purchases so far (not petrol and garage cards) :
