A Warm Sunday Ride to The Tankwa & Stonehenge
« on: April 13, 2014, 10:07:23 pm »
The ride would have been to Ouderbaaskraal Dam , but we were having such a Blast on the sandy , washed out roads , we just kept going , straight to Stonehenge to join Dukgeluk for a braai .

Dankie Henk , die kos was perfek , soos altyd'

Riders were.

The Rondawel Pad is now my all time favorite road.

Adventure Hunter on his Transalp 700

The Tankwa probably had more rain than in previous years , so some long parts of the Rondawelpad are like riding in shallow riverbeds , lekker !

We then headed for stonehenge down another lesser known dirt road,
Where Dukgeluk made us a braai.

After The Braai , we took a ride out to the airstrip and the Pan where they are building all the art for Afrika Burns,
On route , I met up with Arrowfeather , he does aerial rigging and is helping them build these huge structures " which they burn" ???

PREVIOUS YEARS @ Afrika Burns

But the road there was a bit sandy and lekker !
After that  at 16h00, we blasted down the R355 to the Padstal for some "Dust remover" then Ceres for fuel and I gt home sometime after 7.
Lekker moeg , but a good day in the saddle , with good company

Thanks for an awesome ride Andy.

The Tankwa is a very special place to ride in. It's so near Cape Town, yet it's a world away.
We are truly blessed to have it as a place to ride in.

Riding in arid regions always seem to put me in a reflective mood. I catch myself doing some serious introspection while riding, as if the unforgiving yet gentle landscape forces my soul to cleanse itself from the many trappings of society and positions of pride that we contend with every day.

In the Tankwa after riding die Rondawel Pad, which was the highlight of the trip.
Fast hardpack, rocky sections, sandy tweespoor, rivercrossings and driffies, everything you can wish for.
I took it easy, riding mostly at the back.
Had one o-shit moment when a big rock in a corner threw my front wheel out and lost my grip on the bars.
But the suspension on the 950 sorted it out and I got away with it.

Andy took us to ButchH's place, and then we rode the last 30k's to Tankwa Tented Camp.

At Tankwa Tented Camp, which belongs to Dikgeluk on this forum, and which is the base for the annual gathering of bohemia, excess and artistic freedom - Afrika Burns.

Dikgelyk recently added a very lekker afdak to his place, and I for one plan on going there again end of May for a decent kuier.

After lunch and some beers I really had to hit the road as it was getting late and the succubus of the R355 to Ceres was lying ahead.

Peter and myself laid down some serious dust trails on the way to Ceres, where we refueled and then we slabbed it home.
+-650k's for the day.

Andy, thanks for the ride. It was really lekker!!

Thanks Andy and CO for an amazing intro into the Karoo.
This was my 1st trip to Stone Hedge and certainly won't be the last.
What a great group of guys to ride with even though KTMKEV was slowing us down all day.
