One of the last DRs in SA
« on: April 17, 2014, 02:56:57 pm »
One of the last available in SA. Fitted all my bits and pieces and made up a new dash, which now can be seen. Wired in the GPS, accessory plug, camera remote and battery charger. Using my old wheels for offroad. New steel braied brake lines, luggage rack and bash plate.
Kept the original exhaust as the bike performs better than with an after market.

Yes it is an IMS tank.
Thanks Robin .
I have just now read your post on the damage on your old DR . Sorry about that I always admired your old DR.
When I wanted to fit my IMS tank I struggled to get the holes on the tank to match up with the holes in the frame . I eventually gave up fearing to damage something. Is there a trick or must I just use a bit of  "mag en geweld " ?
With a lot of pushing I managed to line up up the one hole but the other one did not line up.
The front end of the tank pushes against something of a flange on the frame ?
Thanks

The DR comes out with a plastic splash plate in front of the tank bolted to either side of the frame. You must first remove it and then your tank fits perfectly.

Robin thanks with the plastic removed the tank fitted easily .
Now do I have it right ?
The vacuum hose on the filler cap must be connected to the vacuum hose on the carb ?
Somewhere between my previous effort in Dec and this morning I lost the plastic connecter to link the 2 hoses . Improvised one but not a tight seal so bike started then died and wont start again ?
Any suggestions ?

Problem solved .
The instructions that came with the tank :
" Fit the barbed hose connector into the vent hose extension then into vent hose that was disconnected from OEM tank . Route hose up to frame backbone then forward to steering triple clamp . Attach to IMS gas cap "
That is what I did ...no start .
Googled " how to fit IMS tank to DR 650.
It is all there . The vent hose on the carb must be blocked off. Did that . DR started .

A good tip with an IMS tank is to import a billet aluminium petrol cap and also using a dremel tool open up the hole where the IMS petcock screws in and refit the Suzuki Tap. Now you will have a better leak free tap plus it cuts off when the bike is switched off.

Thanks .
Just took it for a spin on the nice dirt roads here in Prince Albert .
What a nice bike !
I was going to ask you about the cap will follow your advice.
I hear you on the Suzuki tap but read that the engine fins has to be grinded down.
Stay well.

Yes it is an IMS tank.

Hi Robin. where did you get the IMS tank?
I have the exact same one, but it has sprung a leak, unfortunately these thanks can't be fixed, so I have to source a new one.
