Sealine Qatar Rallye 2014
« on: April 22, 2014, 09:23:52 am »
There is an SA rider in the Qatar Rally on the go at the moment, Kobus Potgieter, can't seem to find any info on him - is he a WD maybe and does anyone have any background, just out of interest?

He's on here, but not active. Cape Town-based naval architect - really nice guy with quite a bit of rally experience. Came 3rd, I think - maybe 2nd - in the Amageza last year on a 690RR.

Thanks. I see he finished 17th yesterday and is still in the race on this morning's live tracking, best of luck to him!

Yep, that's Kobus... he came 3rd in last year's Amageza Rallye.

Very nice guy... See section from the 2013 coverage below:

With the rain pouring down, the Sutherland school sportís stadium change rooms were converted into a competitor commune & workshop area. Kobus Potgieter had this to say, ďArriving in Sutherland was really cold and I just missed the heavy downpour. Looking forward to a nice steak, I realized that a braai is not going to happen. Improvise has always been the strong point of South Africans, and before you know it, we had the gas braai in the ladies toilets cooking dinner. It was a real picture to see myself, Burger, JJ, Charl and Dave sitting each on a toilet having dinner. Not long after, the toilet become Dave's workshop and I think also his bed. These are priceless moments which I love about rally racing.Ē

Go for it Kobus!  :ricky:

Won today by Bang Bang, Coma second. Bang Bang takes overall lead in world championship with Coma hot on his heels and Speedy a little further back. Didn't see how Kobus finished but he seemed to be doing great. Very small field for this event and no noise on advrider... Don't know why....

Hi all. Just an update on the Sealine Qatar Rally.
Was very tough on the bike, body and mind. The navigation was extremely difficult. I have done a couple of international rally's but this one was tough due to heat (50 degrees in the desert) and three problems.
First stupid mistake I made was to changed my seat the day before the race. I always preach not to experiment or try new items before a race. The result, my butt was raw and bleeding on day two.
On day 3, my front tire (mouse) disintegrated due to the heat and rocks. I had to ride for the last 150 km without a front tyre. This was extremely hard on the body.
Day 4, we crossed some salt water rivers. Salt and electrics does not go well together which caused havoc. Day 4 & 5 my biked died on three occasion and on both, I had to push my bike through the finish line.
End result, I finished alright and like a rally, I came second in my class. If you think that you have problems, other riders has clearly more.
Thanks for the interest.
Kobus

Well done Kobus! Looks like an extremely barren and hard landscape in those photos. That your 690RR you were riding?

That's a fantastic achievement, Kobes! Respect ou boet! :notworthy:

I'm curious about the seat - what did you change the stock seat to?

Well done! It's great to get the story straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
On what basis do you decide to ride the 450 or the 690? And which is your next rally?

Seat: I always preach - never try NEW items before the race.  The seat issue is a bit different. I have ordered a 1+ seat from the factory. This is 1,5cm higher than a normal seat. Sitting higher on the bike safe a lot more energy especially on a long race where you have to sit and stand all the time. With a higher seat you legs is at a 45 deg angle. Less effort is taken from your body to stand up. With a lower seat your leg angle is 90deg +/-. This takes a lot of energy from you during a long race.
BUT the seat need to be broken in first.

Long fast rally's I prefer the 690. The 690 is also a much more stable bike and planted on the ground. It is actually less work to ride the 690 vs the 450. When I get a new bike, the previous years bike becomes my train bike. So the 690 is my training bike when I'm in SA.
My 450 is a works factory Racing Rally bike, so the suspension is different, oil pump bigger e.g. This bike stay in Dubai and it is so much easier to ship to international races and so much cheaper. In October, I will be getting my 2015 KTM Rally then this one will be come my training bike.

My 450 was already shipped straight from Qatar to Egypt. The next Pharaons Rally in Egypt is my next one starting next month. My mech will have to go a week before the race to sort out my electrical problems and replace the current engine with my spare engine. Hopefully they will find the problem.

Thanks for the postings
