Day-1: JHB to Orange River
I had the task of planning an expedition to Veldbrand’s Place [Koedoeskloof Guest House] in Ladismith(Cape) for the upcoming 3rd 1100/1150GS/GSA Oilhead Annual Gathering – the choice was to either slab it down and take a day or two’s leave adjacent to the event or make use of the scattered public holidays in April;  I chose the latter BUT then DISASTER STRUCK…  my entire trip was in jeopardy and I was even considering going by cage !

…my bike ‘went dead’ a few days before the trip while I was servicing it! (Later to be discovered due to idiot fingers on computer software). More detail can be found in the following thread:

So it was with a little trepidation(with my Verneukpan accident from last year)  and the lingering painful right shoulder there constantly to remind me fresh in my memory, that I proceeded with caution...

Ride Report to the 2013 BMW 1150GSA Gathering(including ‘the Verneukpan Incident’)…

So worrying about all the things that could go wrong,  packed to the hilt (with an added weight of 134kg) even my trusty Bike Jack that I got from DustRiders/ChrisL, that I started this long solo trip…
I had a seriously late start of 10:00 from Johannesburg due to some ‘packing logistical challenges’ and hit the N1 (to make up for lost packing time).
The trip to River Destiny Lodge(where the 1st Annual BMW R1150GSA Gathering was held) was mostly uneventful, other than the buffeting wind from the west which was seriously affecting my back & shoulder injuries and necessitated me ‘topping up’ my anti-inflammatory medication to relieve the pain.
The pics below are of the late-afternoon entrance to River Destiny Lodge on the banks of the Orange River – and a pic of an early ‘pre-trip clean Peeg’…

I had an ice-cold beer and a lekker meal in the restaurant before retiring to my "River Destiny Safari Tented Room" for the night.
