DR650 1st Gear Roll / Push Start
« on: May 08, 2014, 08:37:28 pm »

With a bit of effort I can push start my DR650 down a hill in 1st gear. (I've had to on occasion)

I've heard this could mean bad compression? No idea, looking for an informed opinion. Most people say it's not possible.

I had my almost new DR650SE giving me a hard time with a stuck starter commuter brush at some Toy Run I think it was 2009.
Pushed the damn thing up the hill above Maynardville and ran it down to bump start in 3rd - with success but barely a the wheel was locking up and the engine only turned over on the third or fourth attempt.

Your valves and valve seats maybe aren't so lekker any more?

I have difficulty, in terms of rear wheel lock up, with my '99 (26 000 kms) in 3rd gear downhill. ???

Could only momentarily release the clutch, to get the motor turning, without locking up the rear.. :o (This was with slamming my bum on the seat, the same time I momentarily  released the clutch! :o)

Seems identical to LeCap's experience. ;)

The lekker think about my old DR is you pull in the decomp lever, and can push start easily in 1st.  :thumleft: Without the decomp is impossible though.

Yeah, I can normally get it right in first. Sometimes have to do a second attempt or get a buddy to push. Rear wheel locks up but with a massive bum slap i can get the rotation I need.
Now that I think about it, I've never gotten it right in second or third gear... maybe 1st just works. Have you tried?

If Dux has done it too surely it's not an issue.

And Lecap, you did my valves about 5 000 km ago. Would you have noticed if the seats were on their way out? It's a 30 000 km bike now.

Anyway, I was more curious than worried. Bad compression would mean worse performance but I'm pretty sure mine performs as well as any other :)

Have to admit, I started in second, then onto third. Will experiment with first.

You can bump start pretty much any single in first but only if it fires immediately. It will not turn over more than maybe two or three times before locking the wheel.

...And Lecap, you did my valves about 5 000 km ago. Would you have noticed if the seats were on their way out? It's a 30 000 km bike now...

Easy enough to check. If the valves are tight something's fishy. The clearances in the DR650SE don't change quickly.
As long as the bike is not running lean, as long as the air filter is working and as long as the spark plugs are ok.
