Attaquaskloof old ox-wagon route
« on: May 26, 2014, 04:31:46 pm »
We have just (this weekend) completed a 3 part video series on this fantastic old ox-wagon route. For those bikers who haven't done it yet, the videos will give you a solid idea of what to expect. It took 2,5 hours in a car. No doubt the bikes will complete it in half that time (unless you fall)  ::):

TR - Why can the route only be driven/ridden in one direction? Conditions or regulation?

You can only get keys and permits at Bonniedale, and that is on the western end - hence the restriction.

Went through about 7 years ago just asked permission and off we went.

Is it now closed to bikes and for 4 x 4 only?

Would not mind doing it again.

If my research is correct, this year marks 325 years since the first european made use of the pass in 1689.

Yess That looks great!!

Spoke to Katot a while ago and he told us about the routes in the area.  We are looking for some more challenging routes to try out, this might just be the one.

Would be great on the MTB as well!

I got the impression that the route was open to bikes. Best is to email them and ask. info@bonniedale.com

Why?

I ride like a little old granny on a low powered two wheeled scooter and inspect every stones placement and return it to its original resting space if disturbed.  :deal:

From Bonniedale farm there are 2 routes out.(In an Easterly direction).
One goes in a South Easterly direction from the farm and is a fantastic ride, beautiful scenery and good narrow gravel roads.
The other one..............you first have to ride a bit along the river bed, then cross the Kammarivier............and then there is a stretch of about 100 meters of VERY VERY gnarly loose uphill with LOTS of rock steps and dongas. Very doable going the other way (Westerly - down) but quite a challenge going up.
This then takes you to the Attakwas Pass and the real Old Oxwagon Trail. The rest is supposedly a doddle.
You need BIG kahoonas, a light bike with long suspension travel, dry surfaces and a lot of skill.
I was there 2 weeks ago and the going was wet.
Rode the more Southerly route.
I did stand there and look at the section for a long long time.

I rode the one going east that joins the R327 just north of Cloetes Pass. Very scenic ride.

In January the drifts were all washed away and caution was required but still a great ride.

Will be going back soon.

The start where you ride along the river bed then up the really difficult steep bit has been added to make it into a challenging 4x4 route.

This picture is after that added section.  It shows the hut at the top but the 4x4 route misses it.  The original ox wagon route came along past that hut & joined the 4x4 route.  After the join the 4x4 route is the same as the original ox wagon route & is easy.  The ox wagons had it easy all the way because the artificial bit was not part of their route.

You guys have got me puzzled now. At the top of that first steep 4x4 section, there are the ruins of the old toll house. So if the original wagon route did not go past there, how can we explain away the ruins of the toll house?
