Two Stroke Dan made an interesting observation the other day:

" the XT500 was probably the first true Adventure bike"

I was at school when that first XT arrived on the scene and, whilst we were impressed with a Yamaha Thumper, we all considered them to be overweight and underpowered. (And that comment embraces the XL's of that time too)

In my opinion the first true Adventure bike was Yamaha's DT1 250 which launched in 1968. It had all the right attributes: light, good on and off-road, cheap, reliable and, most importantly, it was a Yamaha ;D

We have gone from overweight converted roadbikes (the early Triumph or BSA Scramblers) to the DT1 and bikes of similar pedigree and then all the way back to overweight semi-roadbikes ( 1200's etc).

Reading a number of posts on this forum recently, it seems as if a good number of forumers are demanding a modern day DT1
