2000 - 640 Adventure ? Educated opinion needed...
« on: June 05, 2014, 06:13:29 pm »
Hi all,
Need some advice on the bikes advertised in the link below: I had a dakkie before and dont know much about the orange machines.

Went to have a look at these bikes today. you can see they are 14 years old, but otherwise they look & sound great. Both started easy.

These were imported from europe (rode down...) to SA and as far as I can tell 640 adventures only became available in SA from 2003. Is there any differences on the 99/00 models vs newer models when it comes to parts etc. My worry is that I might not get parts for these specific model.

Any comments,inspiration,motivation or tjirps welcome!
regards
You can't buy happiness, but you can buy a bike and thats pretty close!

I'm not so convinced about the 2003 thing cause mine is a 2001 unless mine was also ridden down here. Love it to bits awesome bike! R32 k seems reasonable depending on what needs to be fixed. I paid R23k for mine but I easy spent another R10k on it. The most obvious diffs is a cable clutch on pre 2003 models and there's some valve/cam mod but I decided to look into it once mine fails. All in all I haven't regretted buying mine once!

Oh I'm sure Firecoast would be around soon although hers is a bit younger.

Small improvements were done over the years but the only one that should be strongly considered for pre-2003 is:
Replace the gearbox output shaft roller bearing with a stronger one.

I don't know the details, you will have to do a search, for instance on advrider.com.

I recently had the roller bearings on the cam followers replaced as a precaution on my bike (2003, 45 000 km).

Mine is a 2002. Think the 640's were available in SA as early as 2000.

My personal opinion is that the price is too high. I'd offer R50k as a package.

Main improvements on 2000 models would be the suspension upgrades, inverted WP shocks in the front and the addition of an hydraulic clutch system and new trip computer in 2003. For the rest it remained basically the same.

The main problem I could suggest would be that there has been extensive work performed on these bikes and you would not know what lies beneath.

Do these bikes have high flow heads?
