R102 Old Bloukrans pass - Ride it whilst you still can....
« on: June 12, 2014, 11:25:41 am »
We filmed the old pass in a 2 part series. Interesting history and a road which should be a national monument is rapidly falling apart with fallen trees, rockslides, etc. Although the road is officially closed, you can probably ride it at your own risk. here's the link:

I keep driving past there and always think I need to drive it again. Now I know I will. I think govt are making too much money on the toll road to even worry about preserving the history and loose money on the tolls, sad but true...

Always outnumbered, but NEVER outgunned.....

Went past there last week but it was getting dark when I got to the turnoff and still had to get to Knysna that evening. Now I have to go back.

Can someone confirm it's possible to sneak in?

You can ride it no problem. It is 'blocked' on the stormsrivier side with a pile of earth on the road. Everyone just rides over it.

The pass is beautiful and there is no excuse to detour around it

Rode through there many times even walked it a couple of times. Fond memories.
Can see bits of it in my minds eye now

What puzzles me is that the last time I rode it, there was a great deal of reconstruction work going on.
That's the reason it was 'closed', to enable the contractors to rebuild the road, so surely the intention must be to re-open it?  ???

Ek is die afgelope jaar al 2 keer daar deur, wat snaaks is,is dat die Oos Kaap kant,Bloukrans, swak is maar die Wes Kaap kant,Grootrivier,se brug by  Natures Valley en die Pas pragtig is.My mening is dat as die Oos Kaap regering dit gaan herstel gaan hulle baie TOLGELD verloor, net my mening,ek kan verkeerd wees

Four of us went through the pass on Saturday on our way to Rooiberg Lodge near Ladysmith. We returned yesterday. Had a coffee break in the pass. No maintenance taking place and unlikely that it will ever open again as it will cost millions. Awesome ride and easy to access - also save yourself R40 toll fees!

Drove through on Sunday in the rain
Lovely ride. Noticed one place on Coldstream side where the road is busy collapsing
Major cracks in the tar on the slope side
