Fredda se DR650

Finally did my first farkle on my DR  :biggrin: Was planning on building my own rack, but then I saw this beauty on Gumtree for a bargain.  :deal:

So a while back I started with a bash plate. I finally had the time to work on it again.

This two pics is how far I got before the project got shelved.

Yesterday I made the brackets to fit the bash plate to the bike. The rear bolts are made to be flush with the plate. This morning I finished all the edges and got it ready for painting.

Before I painted the bash plate I fitted it and took the bike for a spin just to make sure everything is fine. There was a slight increase in engine noise being reflected of the bash plate.

I thought of rubberizing the inside of the bash plate, but it was not really cost effective to buy a whole tin of the stuff and only use a little. So I came up with another (read cheaper) idea. To dampen  the noise I stuck this sponge like weather strip on the inside middle section of the bash plate. After sticking it to the bash plate I covered the sponge with black silicone (will post pick tomorrow).

Like daai luggage rack! Die wit DRs is darem mooi! Help die weather strip baie met die enjin geraas?

Ek weet nog nie, sal more kan sê. Wag nog eers vir die silicone sealant om droog te raak.
Moet sê die bash plate het nie meer dieselfde hol blikkerige geluid wanneer mens daaraan tik nie.

Ja daai is baie waar. Sal maar fyn dophou net om seker te maak in die begin. Darem weet ek die silicone kan tot op 100 grade gaan en so ook die verf.

Whoop whoop! Fitted the bash plate and went for a long ride, no problems with heat and quieter with the weather strip insulation.  :biggrin:

I did not weigh the bash plate because I do not have a scale. However, by calculating the surface area and the total volume of the bash plate one can get to a fairly accurate figure for the weight.

The total surface area for my bash plate is 1828.75 cm2

I used 2 mm mild steel, therefore the total volume is 1828.75 x 0.2 = 365.75 cm3

Mild steel's density is 7.85 g/cm3

Therefore the weight of my bash is 365.75 x 7.85 = 2.87 kg

Interestingly, if would have used aluminium (2024 alloy) which has a density of 2.77 g/cm3 (they all vary from 2.63 to 2.85) the weight difference is not that big as I would have thought.

Most aluminium bash plates are made from 3 mm thick aluminium. On the same design an aluminium bash plate would weigh in at the following:
3 mm Aluminium would way 1.62 kg
4 mm Aluminium would way 2.03 kg

The difference between my 2 mm mild steel bash plate and a 3 mm aluminium bash plate on the same design is 1.15 kg.

So with basically a few beers less and a few extra minutes on the exercise bike per week, me and DR are equal to one with an aluminium bash plate.  :biggrin:
