From Darryl via FB:

"Fantastic news Riaan van Niekerk has been added to the ASO Elite list for the 2015 Dakar !!! Let the countdown begin !"

 :blob9: :blob9: :blob9: :blob9:

Fantastic, he should have been elite this year already...

Brilliant!!!!

So how many Saffers, including Wessels are going to be in the 2015 Dakar? (including the other africans)

That is a really good question, and I don't have an answer.
 - Riaan is in, , definitely in
 - Brian Baragwanath, on a quad, definitely in
 - Wessel Bosman, definitely in
 - Brett Cummings almost certainly
 - Kobus Potgieter has ordered a KTM 450RR, but I havn't heard if he entered and if so, if his entry was accepted
 - I am not sure about our Zambian friend David Reeve, but it sounded like he was keen to go?

Spoke to Kobus at Sandveld - he's targeting 2016 but hasn't entered this year despite being in the process of completing a full season of international rallies. What about Darryl Curtis? Wasn't Kenny Gilbert also planning on having a crack?

I don't think Darryl will be entering again, looks like he is concentrating on the organization side of things.

This from the Dakar site.

07/29/14

Darryl Curtis has recently been appointed by A.S.O. as its Dakar representative for the riders coming from South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, from now on, to the Dakar 2016.

His role will be to bring and share his experience of the Dakar to the riders community, and help the future candidates to set-up their plan of preparation. He will notably organized a “Dakar Workshop” once a year.

Darryl, 42, is an experienced rider, and a figure in South Africa. Two-time winner of the Roof of Africa and several times enduro and off-road South African champion, Curtis showed-up on the Dakar for the first time in 2012.

The other Dakar representatives are:
- José Carmona: Portugal
- Chris Evans: UK, Australia
- Henk Hellegers: The Netherlands
- Manuel Tajada (RPM): Spain

Have been speaking to David Reeve this morning and his entry has been confirmed for 2015. Just awaiting confirmation for the mechanics and support team. Hopefully third time lucky for this hugely talented rider and all around great guy!

Could it be?

http://en.motoracinglive.com/News/Dakar-action-for-Valentino-Rossi

The nine-time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi has decided to contest the 2015 Dakar riding a Michelin-equipped Yamaha.
MotoGP star Valentino Rossi will turn his attention to a challenge of a different sort in 2015 when he plans to take part in the world’s most famous off-road rally, the Dakar. The Doctor faces two weeks of cross-country action in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, before the finish in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires on January 17.
The Italian ace has not yet specified a precise objective for the event, but a top 10 finish would surely be a satisfactory result for the 35-year old.
Following the move of Cyril Despres to Peugeot Sport, Valentino Rossi’s recruitment is good news for Yamaha. The first test will take place in July during MotoGP’s traditional summer break.

(I suspect this is just speculative rumour....)

I doubt this one - but would be interesting if he did.

If Yamaha were to put him on a dakar bike, it would really be saying something about his riding skills.
Don't let fear hold you back ..... take it with you!

From Riaan:
With Dakar 2015 fast approaching our Broadlink KTM Factory effort is well on track, we are however a little short on budget. Should any of you be in the position to come on board with us to contribute to our proudly South African Dakar effort it would be much appreciated. Pls in box me?

And below is the quad guy's fundraising appeal:

I don't see it happening. Now Marquez, that would be fun. I would love to see him and Barreda racing.
