Notorious "Off" Spots
« on: July 22, 2014, 10:36:24 am »
After an off on a sandy patch just outside Eselbank en route to Wuppertal I discovered precisely how many riders had a fall on that precise piece of road. High up in the mountains you don't expect this sandy road, with inevitable consequences. :sip:

Do you know of a notorious spot where land is bought often?

List it here - warn us! - with closest way-points, coordinates if you have and a picture as proof!

My humble contribution: the 4x4 road between Eselbank and Wuppertal. I allowed myself to look at the swerving tracks of the previous bakkie that went through, and that was the end of us. Wife and I had a great laugh - fortunately the sand landing was soft.

I have taken a tumble in that exact same sand patch.

EDIT : Found the photos.

In my defense - it was faarking hot and the sand was very loose.  :peepwall:

Perhaps we should rather ask who has not taken a tumble in that infamous little patch of sand, it might be a shorter thread .

I'll start, I have never.......ok I'm lying, I have, one small one and one big one.

Not really an off spot, but a "catch you out every time spot".

On the dirt road between Ceres and Matjiesfontein there is one particular driffie that has quite a big solid rock in the middle of it that seems to catch just about everyone out every time, no matter how many times you have been down there. Flying along when suddenly this driffie appears out of nowhere.

Its better when its full of water, one can see the "guilty" parties quite easily, usually sopping wet from head to toe.

The railroad tracks just north off Delmas Rd towards Rayton have very deep ruts coming over the blind rises. Very dangerous if you are pushing on a bit and don't know about them. Be on the lookout

The main entrance to Atlantis. Very few haven't plowed in there. I'll guess 60% of people who've ever ridden in there have chomped on that bit of sand.

100% of riders to Atlantis have fallen within it's dunes.

I wonder where that road goes? And that, has usually made all the difference. Appologies to Mr Frost

Guys can we not post gps Co-ords of these places. Then we can save it on one file that can be used as a overlay on routes that we are going to ride?

I know one or two people who have had a rest in the sand on Esselbank. I personally love that little section and give it horns through there
