A new DR owner , and a few questions if I may.....
« on: July 23, 2014, 01:48:06 pm »
Hey guys,

New Guy here on your wonderfull forum.
I belong to few other forums and was told of this Adventure forum by a mate. (Thanx 000OMS!)

I was in the market for a bike to replace my car that I drive to work and back.
Taking into consideration that I live 40km out of town and of that 40km, 10km is a awfull "sinkplaat tande trekker" grondpad.
I looked for something that wil be save on our national roads (thus a 600cc +  ;D) aswell as something that will be cheap to maintain and that will be able to do many miles.

I was brought up on a 500 XT Thumper, and looked for a Yami but could'nt find anything that suited my criteria.
Then out of the blue a colleague of mine said he wants to sell his black 2011 DR with 3500km on the clock for a steal!!

I jumped on it and now its in my garage, and I look at it ever so often.
Still waiting to get it registered in my name and then its the 100km to work and back on a daily basis.

Now I have two questions,

- I will need better lighting. In the morning (also some late nights) its still dark and with pedestrains "under the influence" aswell as animals on the gravel road I need to be able to see a wider spectrum. Any ideas?

- Secondly the DR is very soft?? So soft that you underestimate the power and torque of the DR.
Will other motorists be able to here you in traffic??

Thanx a bunch guys!

Yo Copius, Welkom hier

For lighting I have HID's on. Does the trick

As for the second question, I take it you mean quiet? The seat is definitely not soft, although the stock suspension might qualify as soft.

There are aftermarket options as to replacing the stock muffler, with different results as far as performance, sound, cost, weight, etc are concerned.

I reckon an better windscreen might also help. 100km per day with no screen is going to get annoying very soon.

Don't worry about the bike being quiet, you should ride like you are inivisible. If you are bargaining on motorists hearing you, you are basically waiting to die.

And congratulations on the bike.   :thumleft:

Dankie Jagter in Pielas,

Ja die Ingels jong, " I R Boer".....

:thumleft:

Ek wil die fiets so ver moontlik stock hou.

For lights rather get two LED spots from Extreme Lights. They are excellent!

Welkom Copius!

Los daai Zorst net so.

@Mapog,

Jong, ek boer nie self nie. Eks 'n wynmaker by Oranje rivier wynkelders in Upington, maar bly op Kanoneiland. ("It's a island and its mine" -  :P)

Vir my is die exhaust perfek!!

:thumleft: As jy agter inloer sal jy sien waarom! ;)

Spandeer eers geld op 'n bashplate. PSP Racing, Lecap en daars iemand in GP. :)

Geniet jou DR 650! Dis die beste DS fiets daar buite! ;) Net die wat hulle ry, weet dit! ;D

Hello,

I didn't read all the replies, so sorry if I repeat stuff.
I bought the Extreme Lights spots for mine. Can't remember which ones now... but there is a thread here with pics of mine. Those with an orange headlight cover work well, even at night.

I custom-made a screen out of perspex. Works well.

I also had a concern regarding the scooter exhaust. Taking the snorkle out of the airbox gave it a tiny bit more growl. But after much patience, I had a Bosson fitted and now it sounds like a proper thumper.

Geniet hom!  :ricky:

@ Chopperpilot

My DR sal vir eers net 'n Daily Commuter wees.

(tenminste 1200lumen)
Terloops chopper wtf is 'n DS? (Erg noob ek weet - lmpa)

@Sardine

I'll take note of the exhuast's for now, and keep an eye open on the forum to see what the other guys do.
I got a qoute from our Suzuki stealer here in Upington for a Yosimura , best price R10k!! For a sleeve only!!!

I'll check the Tube for DIY Screens.  :thumleft:

Otherwise how do I get hold of Eikeboom?

Most DR 650s have a "Dual Sport" decal on the tank! ;)

Copius

If you have a look on the general DR 650 thread you will find Eikeboom's posts on one of the last few pages. ;D

The Forum's search function should also lead you in the right direction! ;)

I'll have a look if I can find the link! :thumleft:

Some discussions on screens from page 107 on The DR650 Thread.
