F650GS or R1200GS

So, I had a look at both bikes, and both are very tempting options.

The F650GS, however, is in a brand new condition. This bike has not been ridden in around a year, so it did not stand too long. It has only had 2 services in the 6 year period. The mileage of 2000km is so low, as it was only used occassionally for breakfast runs over weekends. The current owner bought it new and will have it serviced by BMW before handing it over to the new owner.

At this stage, I am leaning more towards the F650GS.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Never buy a bike just based on intellectual considerations. You may very well end up with a good bike, but find that you are not happy with it (too big, too small, to powerful, to slow, etc, etc).

Just go and ride it and the one with which you feel most comfortable with (the way it rides, brakes, corners, feels, etc) is the right one.

I just sold a larger faster bike for a Dakar and feel happy on a bike again.

I will be doing a test ride with a 650 and 1200 tomorrow at BMW.

Is the 1200 with 76000km a viable option at R85000?

What kind of money should one budget on for maintenance and mileage related repairs on a 1200 with this kind of mileage on?

Awesome bike.

Looking back I am glad I opted for the 1200.

I would strongly advise that anyone in the same kind of situation also do the BMW rider training first, as I would not have had the confidence to ride the 1200 if I did not do the training first.

Depends on what type of ride you want to do, as mentioned by all replies to you. The one thing nobody says here: 1200 is much easier to handle as with al the weight and so forth it is more controllable.
I'm very short, do have some experience in riding. On testing the 650 and 800 I found the power to be to aggressive for me. So I went for the 1200. Make no mistake, its not a toy.
