Hey there guys, Its been a nasty winter over here so far and there's yet another snow storm hapening outside my window as I type this. At times like these I sometimes find myself wishing I was still back in SA riding along in the sunshine instead of stuck in the house. Its so bad out right now the dog doesn't even want to go out to take a piss!

Anyway, I thought just for fun I'd post some picks from a recent little winter gettaway my Honey and I took. We didn't have bikes but we did get some "riding " in.  ;D

Dogsledding in Algonquin park..an afternoons drive from my place.

We lucked out on the weather, it was really quite nice. I was over dressed and got pretty warm.

My lead dogs were constantly fighting and biting each other every time we stopped, but they loved to run. You go faster than you'd think! Great fun, sliding along silently.

The next day it was off for a back-country horse ride.

Another beautiful day in the forest!

<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/TrevnLori/AlgonquinWinterGetaway/photo#5175121700517422914"><img src="https://lh3.google.com/TrevnLori/R9G5xITBp0I/AAAAAAAAEEw/CrwW195_zf0/s400/IMG_2515.JPG" /></a>
Then we're off on foot / snowshoe for a trek into freshly fallen, untracked snow.

We took a 4 hour hike into the woods and came across some fresh tracks...

Timber Wolf tracks! (somewhere between the size of a wild dog and a Hyiena) We counted ten seperate tracks...a good sized pack for this area. They were obviously very fresh as it had just stopped snowing about ten minutes ago and there was no snow in the tracks! If we were lucky we'd catch a glimpse of them so we started following the tracks. Its tricky though because if you make too much noise you would scare them off but you don't want to come around a corner and surprise them either as they could attack.

As it turns out we track them to this steep raveen where they went into the valley below and it was too steep for our snowshoes and too late in the day to risk finding another way down.

Lucky for us we found another pack resting and playing near the end of a dead end road we decided to explore in the truck the next day.

What beautiful animals!

<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/TrevnLori/AlgonquinWinterGetaway/photo#5175124565260609698"><img src="https://lh6.google.com/TrevnLori/R9G8X4TBqKI/AAAAAAAAEHk/TEZdSVqgjnA/s400/IMG_2403.JPG" /></a>They aren't actually as close as they look....telephoto lens' are great aren't they? They were certainly close enough for a good look though. We were very lucky to get such a good look at such an elussive animal

<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/TrevnLori/AlgonquinWinterGetaway/photo#5175123998324926578"><img src="https://lh6.google.com/TrevnLori/R9G724TBqHI/AAAAAAAAEHM/EoHbQgQHDXc/s400/IMG_2425.JPG" /></a>
After we watched them playing for awhile, they all settled down for a nap. This is how they sleep in the winter, they cover their nose from the cold with their tail and just let the snow pile up on them...it actually acts as insulation.
