Temperature on the Navigator V...
« on: August 21, 2014, 09:47:31 am »
Something weird I noticed. I almost always set the navigator to display the various data fields (instead of a map view). The engine temperature displayed by the navigator is almost always higher than the engine temperature displayed on the instrument panel. The navigator temperature also updates faster (more regularly). I've seen differences of 4 degrees, but mostly they differ by about 2 degrees.

Other fields displyed on the navigator (odo, consumption, etc) are all spot-on.

Technical thought: I get the impression that the temperature value's filtering occurs inside the instrument cluster, after the point in the distribution stream where the navigator picks it up. Thus the navigator's filter (or lack thereof?) does not match the instrument cluster's.

Anyway, just throwing thoughts out there.

To my knowledge you engine only has the a set of temp sensors and regardless of the device you use to read these temps, they obtain it from the same source.

It could be that the navigator or your instrument panels calibration is out....?

Indeed, they use the same source.

I doubt it. Calibration is done by the ECU and should not be a factor once the values are sent to the CAN bus. The Navigator, just like the instrument panel, gets the values from the CAN bus. However, I suspect the instrument panel applies a software filter to the values it gets.

:thumleft:But, I've been known to be wrong before...
