Traveling to Zambia/Malawi
« on: September 03, 2014, 08:19:12 pm »
Where do you get Zambian and Malawian kwatchas, as they are not obtainable in RSA, as far as I know?  And at the borders you have to pay cash!  Any help, please?

At the Malawian border post there is a hidden ATM, where you can draw cash or alternatively you must use runners........

Change at the bureau de change before you cross. Don't use the money changers at the border posts they rip you off. Where are you situated and how much Zambian kwacha do you want. I can bring some for you if you are in cape town

I think some USD should be good for the initial getting there, after that you draw money at their atm,s.

when I was in Zamibia USD was accepted everywhere, just watch out for tourist tariffs when you buy

The previous time we went there, a friend just came back from work in Zambia and brought some kwatchas with for me.  This time I'm not that lucky.  But I think you right, tgg, maybe we will come right with usd.

Nope at the border they only accept kwatchas - lucrative black market for money ex changers as they know it is kak en betaal as jou have to accept their rate.
Will check over the weekend, I also recall having some Pula..

I just travelled through Malawi and Zambia. I travelled with Usd (hide some extras on the bike because when you are in trouble, cash is king). I exchanged at the borders without any problems. Know what the rate is beforehand and competition at the border will get you a better rate than the banks.
