The farmer just called us, he wants us to chop starting at 14H00.
His son will pull us with a eigjt wheel tractor (knak trekker) and we will haul sialage, so even though I will only start work at 2 I should still work 8 hours. Chop till 9 and service trucks.
The service is so import, blow out the sir filter, and then the alternator,  belts, fan, radiator, intercooler and oil cooler.
Our trucks are running 180 degree farenheit up to 210. Anything from 220 is a concern and at 225 you stop.

You get different types of trucking, and the best I think is long hauls like intercity. Those guys don't do nothing other tha. Drive.
We get to drive and maneuver, you got to be wakeup and know what you are doing avoiding the header of the sialage chopper yet close enough to load, load front first the forward to load rear....took some time to hone that skill and still not perfect and then a very quick turn and back into the outfield or tunnel 8)

Reverse into a right sialage pit still is a challenge at times but I am getting there and it should become a second nature soon.

Then when you get stuck the chopper will reverse and push you out and then you start and build momentum. If that does not work you attach a chain to the static rope behind d the chopper. It that does not work the big tractor comes to the show  :lol8:

One get dirty, I looked like a naughty child that has plays in the mud yesterday and then you have the grease service on the truck. There are 3 niples under the truck on the gearbox which is crucial to grease. The release bearing and cluch break and then on all the steering arms, pitman arm, the tie rod, universal joints, slack ajusters, pto motors, pulleys and chains.
If you want to see the boss mad you must neglect servicing properly and suffer a breakage.....eish :o

Luckily I am too kark bang to make a mistake in this regard, and the soft medic hands are now getting harder  :imaposer:

Who else is going to push themselves this hard with only 5 hours of sleep a night :o

Enjoy Tom (and bring me a rattle snake please) :laughing4:

Waar is Tom in die bondel!!!? :o

Hi Chris, we have seen that one. More of an add for Claas in the states, but by far (fact) the best chopper!!
We are actually using a newer and bigger model....our boss has own a couple 2018 models with 12 row headers!
Then also the milo headers. He owns a fair size enterprise here.

Today was day 6, 15 hour minimum per day....we are really getting tired now but as they say in Afrikaans; "as sit pap reen moet jy skep' (Enjoy while it last)
I am honest; it is not always easy. We have daily problem solving which results in hard labour like fixing flats on the trucks, hydraulic leaks (I have one on my truck that I need to repair tomorrow) and name it. The other day we had to replace a hydraulic pump on the trailer, one of 2 that engage with pto and offload the sialage.

There are daily challenges, and the 5hour sleep a night is catching up with all of us in the team.
Then I still have this anaemic issue (related to iron deficiency- bad absorbtion) which doesn't affect my work but I am pale at times when I really worked hard physical hours and I may feel a bit under powered bit still manage to keep up. I can feel that I just do not have that muscle strength I used to have.
Taking supplements to little effect and even eat a lot of energy sweets, drinks, chocolates and so on just to fuel for the hours.

The honesty section here: even if the boss invites me back next year I may decide not to come back because I can't see me keeping up at this pace without causing damage to myself in the long run.
What next? No idea. I have Cdl now and maybe I can come back as a truck driver next year....I don't know. I hate planning my live ahead so let's see  :) bit I would like to drive trucks and has improved a lot not with the 18 wheeler!!

I can see why the boss likes South Africans, but to burn them out like that is also not a good business plan, he'll burn through all the good ones.

And yet people work for him year after year, and it seems some even end up in the US? Maybe he is just catching up after firing 3 workers and probably losing some contracts? Speak to some of the old timers, and find out what it is like on the long term. Maybe it isn't always this hectic.

Hehe, I've also wanted to be a long-distance truck driver. "Travel and see the world and get paid to do it", I thought. So naive ::)

It's a job for young people. Doing Windhoek to Cape Town twice a week  becomes hard work.

Yes it is a job for young people with a lot of physical strength and stamina.

I keep up, but I will not keep this pase end out unfortunately.
Year after year almost 3/4 of the entire team gets replaced.
Some last only a couple of days, others weeks or months and some years.

Not all the farms are running at this pase, and yes the first half of the season is not that hectic but still busy! ;D

We have just completed a big chopping contract, and now we need to move tad South in the Oklahoma panhandle to do another field for a dairy.
Then back to Goodwell for 2 more fields and after that no idea but they say it will be busy end out.
My return ticket is booked for the 28th of Nov and it is still a long haul.
In the meantime I'll learn as much as I can wrt trucks and whatever else there is to learn.
To change a tyre in the field with wind and dust has become second nature.
Take it off by hand with tyre levers, patch and cheetah back on the beat, fit and go.

I hope to get a truck driving job next year but will see what comes up  :)

Miss taking good pictures, these all cellphone pictures

I have done 4 x puncture repairs in a week, and still have 2 slow leaks but it holds 3 days.
Once it is only a day I need to repair.
Tyre plugs do not always work on hard working trucks, we patch with gators on the inside wall of the tyre

So today we finished the big contract and moved further south to chop a circle of corn for the dairy.
Their scale closes at 19H00 which meant we did not get to work into the night and guess what I did with my free time?
While the rest of the crew will out with a beer I decided to run a few kilometers  :) and now having a beer with them and feel good.
Had to open my trucks radiator drain plug because I had a leak in the system and now need to get fresh antifreeze and water in tomorrow morning. Maintenance is ongoing on sialage  :lol8: trucks but I do enjoy the work....but pull serious amps at times  :-[
Happyness is in your head, and I choose to be happy albeit pokken moeg!!  :imaposer:
