Bezuidenhout's Pass, Verloren Valley (VIDEO ADDED!!!)
« on: September 09, 2014, 09:49:18 pm »
So we went to Memel for the weekend. Decided we want to do some bad ass technical riding before the rainy season starts.

Loaded up the bikes on the trailer Friday and we are off to Memel Hotel, we really didn't want loaded bikes for where we were heading.

The plan is to do Bezuidenhouts pass as early as possible. We heard the pass has really, really, badly deteriorated the last while, and we wanted to check it out while we are still fresh just in case it gets rough. And oh boy, did it get rough...

Video link:

The turn off for Bezuidenhout Pass.

Sign is a bit rusty. I don't think many people go this way anymore...

We start on top, this is the view of the road from some old kraal ruins.

Ok, lets do this!

First rough section. Couple of steep step ups. I can not even begin to explain how the camera does not this any justice. It's a bit more difficult then it looks.

Some more technical shizzle. I thought I was going to die more than once in a matter of a few meters here.

This is the actual road... Super steep step ups, many rocks and an annoying fence :(

We stop to take a breather. This is hard work. It's difficult keeping the right mind set to do this.

Some more tough sections.

Woohoo, made it :D

Oh wait... Front brake on loose rocks, bad idea :(

Thanks for the hand HSK! <3

Lets not do that again hehe...

Right at the end of the pass before we get to a main road. The condition improves greatly as you go down the pass.

Next up, Verloren Vallei.

Is it downhill all the time??
only in september / december.  :imaposer: there is a climb not so steep from North to South. but the uphill is definitely South to North and will be hard work.

Yes, this is all downhill. I think it can be very interesting doing it the other way around though. Maybe next time :ricky:

After some dirt highway we get to a spot called Verloren Vallei. You ride over some beautiful rocky hills and get rewarded with a spectacular view.

At the top of the first big hill.

The view!

The road in the distance.

Navigating the next part of the road.

A few rocky step ups.

It was a lekker ride indeed. Really damm scary in some places, but also very fulfilling when you finish it.
We did it this past weekend as the rainy season will be upon us soon, I can only imagine how disastrous it can get there when you throw water into the mix :o

After refueling at Monrose, HSK get's a flat rear tyre. Nasty rusty old nail. I swear we only ever get punctures on these little tar sections eish...

We repair it, inflate the tyre. Oh wow, it's pinched... Take it off, patch the torn bit. Put it back on again. We lose about an hour and a half here and we still got quite some distance to go to get back to Memel.

Going up Normandien Pass. It's not a particularly difficult ride or anything, more of a "rustige" scenic pass. Bit of rocks and ruts here and there, nothing hectic though and most of the steeper bits are cement making it easy going. Loved it just as well. We didn't really get time to take many pictures up here as we lost quite a bit of time with the silly puncture and still had a long way to go.

Near the top of the Normandien Pass.

We get back to Memel Hotel just before evening time. Sunday we will be doing a really cool route I saw in Deon Meyers book, Dirt Busters (Ridders van die Grondpad). It's rated as 4/5 in difficulty and heck, we did come here to do some more challenging riding so that's just awesome. We ask Chris the owner at Memel Hotel about it, and he prints out a map. The route is only 56km or so, but all made up of good fun. Can't wait!!!
