This picture was taken by one of those truly masochistic earth dwellers: a cyclist doing the passes in the Alps for fun!  Only joking.  I found them everywhere and they are really dedicated to their sport.  :thumleft:
I started biking as an under achiever and it went downhill from there...

Down the eastern side of the Grimsel is a vertical drop of zig-zagging asphalt.  This is the view looking west about one third up the Furka pass.

From the top of the Furka with the Grimsel in the very far distant background.  It is a rail line crossing the road to the left.  I had to wait for a train when I crossed.

From the end of the Furka you can take an alternative route down to the town of Airolo.  This pass is called the Tremola and was hand built and packed with cobble stones just like the Champs Elysees (who watched the final day of the Tour de France?).  Anyway, this is 12km of very tight switchbacks and a delight to ride.

From here it was an onward journey to the Umbrail pass.  There was a stop and go because of roadworks so the parking in the road was not just a casual ignoring of Swiss road rules.

The Umbrail crosses into Italy and meets the Stelvio pass more or less at its highest point.  I went down the western side, up again and then down the eastern side of Stelvio.

This picture was taken upwards on the western side of Stelvio but, alas, a camera has worse depth perception than a teddybear with one eye...

Last one.  Eastern side of Stelvio dissapearing in the distance.  I did all the switchbacks (dunno how many but plenty), some up and down.  The turns can be tricky but you learn to look ahead for traffic and if nothing is coming, you can use the whole road.  But I also saw somebody falling in a very narrow uphill turn.  It was a beautiful day so there was, I guess, more than the usual traffic.  The stop at the top was busy with many holiday makers, bikers and cyclists.  If I wasn't alone I may have spent more time but it was a bit crowded.

If, in a year or so, you get that itch for a new bike again, rather fly over, rent a bike and you can do plenty of passes in 5 to 7 days.  It will be a break from winter too (not that you need that living in the Lowfeld, but still...).
