Rebel Ride, Kalahari National Bash 2014
« on: October 07, 2014, 10:05:37 pm »
10 guys, 1 girl... and some very hard, rough, tough and dirty riding... Welcome to the Rebels National bash tour!

*Adding the video to the front page so it's easier to find*

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/hJ1aLO_ijNk" target="_blank" class="new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/hJ1aLO_ijNk</a>

The plan:

2 Oct - Day 1 547km Pta to Bray
3 Oct - Day 2 509km Bray to Molopo
4 Oct - Day 3 Molopo
5 Oct - Day 4 487km Molopo to Vryburg
6 Oct - Day 5 476km Vryburg to Pta

The riders:

1 Orangeswifty  950SE
2 Anorexia  990 Adv
3 Subie  XT660R
4 Smokes  990R
5 Bushtrotter  990 Adv
6 Schalk  XT660R
7 Hondsekierie  950 SE
8 Minxy - 950SE
9. Kevin ZA  950 SE
10. Hanno - Backup vehicle driver
11. Kilroy

This being my first bash, you can only imagine I was very excited. I barely got any sleep Wednesday night. I couldn't stop thinking about things. Have I packed the right clothes? Is everything on the bike really A ok? Etc, etc. So many things to consider!

Smokes meets me and HSK at our spot. I make the boys delicious coffee and breakfast. Still can't believe the day has finally come!

We meet with the rest of the guys and get on our way. Little do we know it was really going to be a long day.

Fueling up!

Smokes, ready to ride.

Was ist das!? BMW badge? KTM rider!? You better believe it!

Our support / back up vehicle. Backed by Hanno and Kilroy.

Franna: "Mmmmm, ek wonder wanne gan ons stop vir 'n brekkie?"

As we get to our first bit of dirt road, disaster strikes :(
There's a dip with some water. Subie hits the ditch at speed and (in his own words) goes down like a sack of shit. I got such a fright when I saw his bike lying there in the middle of the road. It was almost surreal. "This can't be happening? Not here, not now?" We stop and assist where we can. Now this guy is a real "yster", he got up and picked up his loaded bike before we could even get off our bikes to go help out. Luckily Subie is ok. A bit roughed up, but nothing broken. The bike, not so much so as the waterpump housing is broken and his trip comes to an early end. It really sucks it had to come to this, but we had to get Bud500 to lend a helping hand (thanks a million by the way Bud!) and trailer the bike away. Subie has made another ride report relating to this incident, I would recommend reading up all the details there.

Subie, inspecting the damage to his bike.

XT660 all bashed up :(

Not too long after. Schalk has a puncture. HSK and Smokes help and we get it fixed quickly. This will not be the first puncture for the day though. Schalk strikes some very bad luck and ends up getting 4 punctures in total and has to be recovered by the back up vehicle. So with both the XT's out of action, we are left with only the KTM's.

Lets not forget HSK and Smokes's little tyre dance!

With no time to waste we push on, stopping for lunch over at Tallies just outside Zeerust.

We wolf down some burgers and get on the road again. It's still a long way to Bray!
This is where things got interesting. We eventually get on the old Botswana border patrol roads. It's twisty sandy twee spoor all the way, really something special.

HSK's mighty beast parked in the dried up lake.

It was very dry here compared to when I last went past. Still beautiful though!

Here's the same spot earlier this year.

We were worried that we'll run out of petrol and got the support vehicle to stock up on fuel for this leg of the trip. Ironically enough, just a stone throw down the road is a petrol station... Couldn't help but laugh when we saw it :P

Kilroy having a zamalek with the locals.

Stretching my legs. The SE is not the most comfortable bike to ride on tar, you pretty much need buns of steel...

Thumbs up  :thumleft:

The rest of the trip to Bray involves a lot of sand. There is sand, sand, oh and guess what!? More sand :D Some very deep rutted lovely sand. Somebody mentioned there would be a couple of sand patches on these roads. Well they lied... It was more like non stop sand... Anyway, no complaints. Once you get into it, it's not that bad.
We just keep moving, there was really no time to stop and roll around in the sandpit. We keep a very good pace and make it to Bray before nightfall. Luckily there are no more scares or falls except for Schalk which had to berecovered because of ongoing puntures :/

Tapama Lodge where we spend our first night.

<snip>

I must agree with Minxy
This piece of the route from Makgobistad to Boshoek Border post next to the Botswana Border was amazing!
Smokes and myself were leading the pack and really got into a groove on the sharp curves next to the borderline......sliding the backwheel in and powering out on the apex.
Having a hungry grunting 990R on your outside backwheel forces you to hold the inside line around the bends and really tests your concentration.
Felt like I was in a rally! :thumleft:
Great Ride

Ok, so we wake up bright and early, with only the slightest Babelas :P It's going to be another long day...

There's no time for a warm up and we get thrown right back into that deep sand all over again. Those roads near Bray are really not for the feint of heart. The owner at the Tapama lodge is surprised I ride my own bike and tells me he's never seen a lady ride these sandy roads before *blush!*

HSK puts on his helmet cam for a bit in the Molopo nature reserve and we manage to get a couple of cool pics to show just how sandy these kalahari roads really are. I think I enjoyed this part of the trip the most. We were literally in the middle of nowhere. This place is just so remote and removed from everything. It felt like it was just us and the thick red sand, the green thorn trees and the blue kalahari sky for miles and miles.

Fulling up at Vostershoop just before the long stretch.

Inside the nature reserve.
