This being my first bash, you can only imagine I was very excited. I barely got any sleep Wednesday night. I couldn't stop thinking about things. Have I packed the right clothes? Is everything on the bike really A ok? Etc, etc. So many things to consider!
Smokes meets me and HSK at our spot. I make the boys delicious coffee and breakfast. Still can't believe the day has finally come!
We meet with the rest of the guys and get on our way. Little do we know it was really going to be a long day.
Fueling up!
Smokes, ready to ride.
Was ist das!? BMW badge? KTM rider!? You better believe it!
Our support / back up vehicle. Backed by Hanno and Kilroy.
Franna: "Mmmmm, ek wonder wanne gan ons stop vir 'n brekkie?"
As we get to our first bit of dirt road, disaster strikes
There's a dip with some water. Subie hits the ditch at speed and (in his own words) goes down like a sack of shit. I got such a fright when I saw his bike lying there in the middle of the road. It was almost surreal. "This can't be happening? Not here, not now?" We stop and assist where we can. Now this guy is a real "yster", he got up and picked up his loaded bike before we could even get off our bikes to go help out. Luckily Subie is ok. A bit roughed up, but nothing broken. The bike, not so much so as the waterpump housing is broken and his trip comes to an early end. It really sucks it had to come to this, but we had to get Bud500 to lend a helping hand (thanks a million by the way Bud!) and trailer the bike away. Subie has made another ride report relating to this incident, I would recommend reading up all the details there.
Subie, inspecting the damage to his bike.
XT660 all bashed up
Not too long after. Schalk has a puncture. HSK and Smokes help and we get it fixed quickly. This will not be the first puncture for the day though. Schalk strikes some very bad luck and ends up getting 4 punctures in total and has to be recovered by the back up vehicle. So with both the XT's out of action, we are left with only the KTM's.
Lets not forget HSK and Smokes's little tyre dance!
