Progress or not? That is the question!
« on: October 09, 2014, 11:42:14 am »
The tarring of Sani Pass is on the cards. It is no longer a question of if, but when? The authorities keep releasing snippets of info, then go back into 'stone-wall' mode. The multi lane road being built by the Chinese in Lesotho must be a mammoth investment. It is 180 km long and includes the Kotisephola Pass (3003m ASL) and it will end at the summit of the Sani Pass - a 4x4 only gravel road. It makes no sense at all. If you have not driven or ridden Sani, you probably have about a two year window of opportunity. o get that gravel!

On the same topic, we have heard on good authority that Ongeluks Nek Pass has is also scheduled for upgrading and tarring. This serious off-road pass is one of the true 'holy-grail routes' for adventure bikers and 4x4 enthusiasts alike. Our contacts inform us that the design and tender has already been approved, but budget allocations are still pending.

Progress, sometimes causes negative issues and inevitably there are two schools of thought. I suppose government will inevitably focus on what is best for the nation as a whole. So,that makes two gravel passes you absolutely must do before the tarring takes place. Both are featured fully with 'on car video' action on our website.

(Not sure if Sani is open to m/cyclists?)

(Ongeluks Nek is definitely open to adventure bikers)

Tarring of Sani pass is not a loss, the charm and appeal of Sani is gone already.  It is now a green route (unless there is snow or ice) even wet it is a green route.  Ok not an easy green route but a green route nevertheless.

Sani pass is not the same as it was a few years ago.  Go there on Sunday and see the thousands of soft 4x4’s, bicycles (with 5 year olds cycling to the top), foreign tourists, buses, etc.  All doing the Sani thing.  I saw an old 200cc road bike going up there the other day.

One can’t get into the pub anymore as it is too full and that is about to be demolished for a new highest pub.  Probably double story to get a few extra meters in height??
Both the pub and road is going to be bigger and “better”.

The road from mokhotlong to oxbow, was tarred a few years ago, with a nice scenic easy route. About 23 years ago it was tar, and now it gets tarred again, so we give more mineral rights away for a tar road that we had in the past and we call it progress.  If only it was done right in the first place!

As said Sani pass is not Sani pass anymore.  The excitement is not there.  The first time I went up, the bends at the top for the last 8 corners was a several point turn and you reversed till your bumper was hanging over the edge just to make each turn, now that was scary fun.  That was in the eighties.

Now can you imagine what a great ride, the NEW TARRED SANI PASS will be, what a ride to get to the better and more difficult passes further inland.

However the pass will soon be full of superbikes, Harley Davidson’s (trying to make the twisties), topless sports cars, bigger tour buses and a totally different crowd.  all telling war stories in the pub how nice the drive / ride was to the top.

So once again we will go forwards to go backwards, or is it the other way round.
