2014 Roof of Africa (a picture report)
« on: December 07, 2014, 10:28:57 pm »
This year the Roof turned out to be even harder than last year's one with all the rain and
made for some awesome spectator value. I went to help Losper as part of his pit crew.

Along the way we got to see some of the action and I took these pictures. Obviously only
the riders will know the real hardship because we spectators only see a tiny fraction of what
really went down.

I will start with my personal favorite. Unfortunately the riders face is hidden behind his hand
and the handlebar but for those who don't know, this is Graham Jarvis riding the last difficult
section before the finish of the event.

Fantastic, thanks Michiel, cant wait!

Shockingly few pics around of this premier event. Not even on the off-road forum where half the members go spectating anyway.

My internet is ever so slow tonight. I will continue with the rest of the pictures tomorrow.
Telkom has me right where they want. On the farm we have no automatic lines and no cell
signals so I have no other option but to pay them (Telkom) R600/month for 1Gig of fucking
slow and unreliable internet via their V-sat system. Robbery I tell you.  >:(

Anyone with an e-dirt/moto101 or other related forum membership please link this report there.
I don't seem to manage with those sites because of their shit interface and impossible-to-understand
way of posting. Wilddogs rule!  :thumleft:

Almost 1am and I'm still trying.

As usual it all starts with some mad racing in Maseru "round the houses".

Some spectators.

Losper looking like he is ready for three days of hellish riding in the mountains of Lesotho.

Losper was in the very last group to ride the "Round the houses" so by the time we made it to the time trial some riders
were already done. I was ecstatic to be just in the right place at the right time to get these shots of the young hero.

It rained just enough during the days running up to the Roof so these spectators could do something different.

Losper's laaitie, Ruan Laubscher, was also riding. This happens to be his first Roof of Africa and he went for silver class.
Not long after his old man set off on the 60km time trial the boy came back in with good time.

Mother and son.

Ruan Laubscher.

At the Start/Finish site lots was happening with helicopters landing and taking off again but
for me the real action was on the route so I back-tracked a kilometer or two down the mountain.

Even the time trial was to set the standard. The pictures will tell the story.

It was good to see riders from other races also taking up the sport. In fact, there were quite a few black riders participating.

The spectators loved giving a hand.

This is music box.

This little guy made up for his size with enthusiasm.

I dunno, Michiel, but I reckon these are the best shots I've ever seen of the Roof. As always, your story line and pics are well worth following. They are already telling a story of the challenge and the hardship those riders go through.

So often, all we ever see is footage of the top ten but this to me, is the Roof.

Those pics of Music Box as well as the 2 fallen heroes really capture the ride  :thumleft: :thumleft:

The secret about the time trial on Thursday is that one must do your best to ride it in as
little time as possible because it determines your starting position on the first real race day.
Starting at the back might be jolly social but it also means you will end up at the back of
terrible bottle necks during the stage.

It was clear that some riders were pushing themselves real hard to achieve a good starting
position. Here at Music Box, a mere 1km from the finish line, things were getting rough.
The following 4 pictures are a sequence taken in less than a minute.

Funny thing was that, although Music Box has two lines with the one easier than the other,
almost everyone took the difficult line despite my attempts to point the way. See, this time
the high line was the wrong option. Normally one always take the high line on these tracks.

High or low, persistence paid off. Victory!

Losper surprised us by coming in almost an hour earlier than expected. He must have pushed
himself beyond breaking point because he was stukkend by the time he got to Music Box.
