I sometimes wonder if I should sell my G650XChallenge and get a 450.
The 650 has every "fault" sorted.
Soft rims - fixed with brand new Excel rims.
Air Shock - Fixed with a brand new MP Custom shock.
Heavy exhaust - Fixed with a brand new Wings exhaust.
Floppy tail syndrome - fixed with a strong tail tidy from Rockfox.

I really love it though. Just thinking a 250-450 might be a better 2nd bike to compliment the 1200gs

I solved it with a half loaf of 'best of both' - Husky TE610 and a BMW G450X … to compliment my HP2  :ricky:
i.e. keep the 650

If I keep the 650 and get a 450 I'll probably start loosing nads.

I'm guessing less chain 'needed' to be used on additional front tooth, rather than say 2 rear-teeth?  :dontknow:

Adding one tooth up front is about equal to reducing 3 teeth at the rear for a similar ratio, thus less chain for rear sprocket change.
of course, I am a 'Lefty', so I got this wrong!
Stepping DOWN on the rear, not up!
Cheers

no, will Google them now, thanks  :thumleft:

And Gearing Commander, thanks, I used your 'link' 2 years or so back, that was when I worked the numbers out to see what I'd be getting, will try and run the numbers, and post the results here!
Cheers, and regards!

Quote
The 450 always intrigued me for its low weight and being on the road stock.

look, they can be had for pennies (orphan-bike-status), are heaps of fun WITHIN THEIR LIMITATIONS, and I hardly ride my 1150 any more, preferring the 450...

the 450 FORCES me to find every gravel road/track i can find, since it is not comfortable at over 115km/h, so in a way it may be more PRACTICAL than your 650, g-i-v-e-n that you own a 1200.
Obviously, it needs additional fuel-carrying capacity, and it may need a stronger rear spring, especially when packing (light) luggage and extra fuel.

But if you follow some 'light-adventure' riders as I do, these bikes CAN go good miles, when run in LOW power mode!
Cheers

Chris have you tried ChainTech for the sprocket?
I phoned Chain Tech, they are unable to help, but said the engineering company 'Mech Tech' (JHB?) will make one up, if supplied with a sample (easy for me to do).

I suspected - and they confirmed - that the longevity of a bespoke/manufactured CS sprocket would be LESS than an off-the-shelf product.
Around R650 for one sprocket, compared to say R250 (?) for an off-the-shelf product.

Comments?

The good quality off the shelf are high spec steel and hardened - the ones that will be bespoke probably not.

another one, no affiliation, and km's and / or hours not mentioned in the ad...
https://www.gumtree.co.za/a-motorcycles-scooters/vryheid/2009-bmw/1001903818150910183180409

Has BarkBusters and header-protection-cage fitted (not seen one for the G450X before!)
also swing arm protectors, and front brake disk protectors...

Just R30K, I do not know the bike/owner/or even know anything about Vryheid  , so buyer beware, but not a bad price at first glance...

Be aware it MIGHT have been an ex-Dealer bike (see front mudguard), and this could mean it's been thrasher or well-looked after, !
