I'm looking into buying a secondhand 690 and am trying to figure out the differences between all the model years. After trawling the various wikis and forums, I've compiled this list so far.

I know there was a fairly significant change in 2012 when the engine changed from the 654cc mill to the 690cc unit. In terms of suspension, it looks like they basically started calling the old "E" the new "R".

I'm hoping some of you could help me flesh it out...

2014:
  • True ride by wire
  • new ECU (not TuneECU compatible as at Jan 2015)
  • ABS standard
  • dual-spark
  • New fork: one with rebound damping, the other with compression damping, like the 1190)

2013:
No change?

2012:
  • 690E discontinued; new "R" has same height and travel as old "E".
  • True 690cc (49kW and 68Nm)
  • 25mm shorter suspension, lower seat
  • Seat height 910 mm. or 36.81in.
  • Ground clearance 280 mm. or 11.02in.
  • Suspension travel 250/250 mm. or 9.84/9.84in.
  • New oil filter
  • Electronic throttle (ECU can keep it closed, but not open it)
  • Electronic immobiliser system
  • The better headlight and instrument cluster from the 2008 non-R version
  • Weight fueled 150kgs

2009 - 2011:
From the parts fiches, I gather that the 2009 to 2011 bikes were mostly unchanged, apart from:
  • Some bolts changed from steel to stainless-steel outside the engine.
  • Engine and gearbox unchanged, but clutch bolts and flywheel different?
  • Forks valve stacks changed.
  • something subtle changed in rear shock's lower half.
  • Radiator fan/shroud/mounting different.
  • Valves same, but guides new part number.

2009:
  • 654cc engine (45.3 kW@ 7500 RPM and 64Nm @ 6000rpm)
  • Suspension 275 mm (~10.8in) front and back
  • 300mm ground clearance
  • Head light 35 W
  • EXC-style front fender
  • differences in plastics color and an orange frame on the '09/'10 R (vs black on "E")
  • seat height?

2008:
  • 690 E only, no R. The E has the bigger instruments and better headlight. Larger instrument cluster with a tach, although this is prone to "clouding"?
  • Suspension 250 mm (~9.8in) front and back
  • Head light 55 W
  • Super Enduro front fender

Common:
  • 12L Fuel tank
  • Tyres 90/90 – 21 and rear 140/80 – 18
  • Alternator 224W

For example, I've heard that an electronics box's location was changed somewhere along the line. I know there are differences fitting fairing kits to the 2014 bikes, too, so there must be more substantial differences here somewhere. Could anyone elaborate?
