Ok,

here we go with item 3. A cost effective Roadbook holder for Rallye Bikes.

Design criteria:
1.  Standard replacement cross bar or flat mounting .
2.  Two power protected motors designed for redundancy. (See below)
3.  LED backlight (possibly switchable to save power.)
4.  Quick release formed Lexan cover with expanded foam gasket for maximum water and dust protection.
5.  Standard A5 Roadbook roll up to 48mm thick. (approx 10 to 13m - to be confirmed)
6.  Unique waterproof thumb only rocker switch for paper travel in handlebar mount.
7.  Manual winding nobs.
8.  Lexan backplate to keep paper flat.
9.  Standard 12v feed from motorcycle battery with internal fuse.
10. Dimensions to be confirmed. Weight to be confirmed.

Motor and drive redundancy.
We are finalizing the 'drag drive' system to keep the paper tight at all times.  At this stage this is our biggest unknown as we never saw an 'actual' roadbook to get a feel for the tension in the paper.  On the drive side the system will be fitted with two motors (one forward and one reverse).  The system will include spare drive belts that can be fitted within 30 seconds without any tools in case of failure.  In the event of a motor failure the belt can swapped between the paper rolls and the motor direction reversed and failed motor disabled to ensure effective navigation.  In real life this would only be required if the forward (hard working) motor fail as we assume the reverse direction is not frequently used and the manual knob can be used.

On the wishlist.
Removable paper roll(s) with little stand to allow winding when the roadbook is 'marked up'.

All the above 'fancy' features will not really increase the cost and sole purpose is to ensure a reliable product.

OK, for those who used a Roadbook before. What did WE miss and what did you not like or failed on your unit?  All input and criticism will be appreciated.
