That is newer than a 2000 as it does not have the timing plug on the right hand side of the motor. and by the way that is a E model, check that the radiators aren’t blocked as the radiator reservoir is brown, and make sure that there is no metal in the oil as then it gets expensive, I had to rebuild a complete motor because a bearing cage broke and put metal through the oil pumps .and get parts from Thumper talkhttps://www.thumpertalk.com/shop/Popular/Suzuki-DR-Z-400-c2447/?utm_source=Store&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=DRZ-400+Customers much cheaper than getting here and the arrive within 3 weeks.

Thanks for the link and the info G. I will be bringing the bike home end of next week. Then the first thing will be to start, run and listen for noises. Then look at the oil for any signs of metal. . If in doupt I will do a strip down and do the preventative maintenance engine overhaul of all moving parts. But I will have to pick the brains of you guys that know these Suzukies.

Remember all DRZ motors are fairly noisy . check oils and remove the sive from the bottom of the oil tank , at the banjo bolt and check for metal there. but if there is no metal and no water resedue in the oil, flush the radiator , change the oil filter ( remember to put the O-ring in behind the filter) put in castrol activo and the bike will be a great thing to play with.

Spend some time with it and it can look like this.

Jeez your DRZ looks good. I wil do the oil Check thing. Somehow I think the farm bikes don't work as hard as the road bikes do. Hoping for a sweet motor 😊

How do you manage to take chunks out of the seat ? No seriously ! See there is still some smog stuff on the side of the carb you can remove.

You must remember this was a plaasbike, maybe a goat took a bite to taste, goats are known to eat your clothes off the washing lines.

I am in Witbank from J-Bay to collect my new old DRZ 400 . I run the bike and took it around the block a couple of times and the motor runs very sweet, quiet with no noises . So I am very happy with the purchase . I need to buy some goodies like front shock covers, plastics, aftrmarket indicators .viper or similar speedo meter etc . I am in Witbank for a couple of days and was hoping you DRZ fans could point me in the0 right direction around the Jhb or Pretoria area to spend some money. I also need a bash plate, anybody know where to get one ?

The motor runs very smooth and quiet. A sign of oil in the radiator, I suppose it's a seal on the water pump ? Wht does the DRZ 400 experts say

That is serious, and the water pump packing up. Just go and read on the DRz thread. Think Niva's bike had a pump failure, so just make sure.

Damn I think it could rather be the head gasket

Usually if the waterpump seal goes coolant will drip out the drain hole on the outside. There are good write ups on Thumpertalk to fix this. I would test the head gasket first.

Have had a oil pump failure as a result of a engine failure... a a result of a bad mechanic

Oil in the radiator can only be a few things, first off is it thick and black or is it milky white?

The water has very little white oil floating on top. Just enough oil to dirty my finger. The water tank is also rusty colour dirty.
