Advice needed - 1992 Honda XLr 250
« on: February 13, 2015, 01:37:52 pm »
Hi fellow dogs

I am looking for a roadworthy smaller bike for commuting to work (I work 2km from home) and maybe to use for weekend fun. I don't want to pay a "arm and a leg" as I am already doing it on my F800GS  lol8 . I found the above mentioned  bike advertised for R12k, 29 000km on the clock, new tires, chain and sprockets. Very neat on the photo's in the advertisement.  I'm not familiar with this bike and any advise will be appreciated. It this a good buy and are parts easily available.

Thank you

I have a MTB, but am also looking for something (with an engine) to play with over weekends. And laptop on bicycle is also a issue. I need to cross a busy intersection and the taxi's stop their as the like. I don't want to make myself a victim of grab and run  ::)

Bullet proof little bikes and low maintenance! will be a good choice if you intend using it as a weekend play bike.
Power wise also adequate as a commuter its got enough grunt to get you in front of that taxi!
I say go for it!
If its the baja  model even better (twin headlights ) they are scarce!
Parts are interchangeable with the xr and easily available.

Thanks for the reply. I'll go and have a look at the bike over the weekend. Unfortuantely it is not the Baja.

I bought a second hand Jonway scooter for R2k which I use for short distance travel. Must say it works very well for me. Once I loaded a case of beers, bag of charcoal and some groceries onto it (cant do that with my Vstrom)

Thanks for the reply CED. I am looking for a cheap bike for commuting, but it must also double up as as weekend fun bike and to improve some of my skills on the 800GS. I'm just considering my options. The 800GS is a very nice bike to commute with, but at the end of the day the running cost are the same (if not more) than my car. I'm also affraid that I might get "gatvol" for the 800GS if i ride it everyday of the week.
