Zambian quickie - Lusaka to Lake Kariba and back
« on: February 22, 2015, 07:05:28 pm »
So this morning at 5am, I could not sleep anymore, so I decided to get on the bike and ride to Lake Kariba.

This is not really a ride report, but just a bunch of pictures of a quick 450km jaunt down to Kariba and back.   :thumleft:

Sunrise between Lusaka and Kafue

Going down the escarpment towards Chirundu

So many of these next to the road, the road between Harare and Lusaka is very very dangerous where it winds up the escarpment in Zambia

Trucks, trucks, trucks and more trucks..........  :xxbah: :xxbah:

So many Baobab's in this part of Zambia!

Finally arriving at Lake Kariba

Then took a ride on all the small tracks I could find....

When people moan about potholes in SA, I just smile....

Then took a ride out to Sandy Beach Resort, a very rustic spot, where Africa Time is king, so don't expect anything to be done fast at this place!

But at least the beer is ICE COLD!

It's a tough life in Africa!

Then took another track back to the main road, such nice riding spots here, jou just leave the main road and there are tracks going everywhere!

Arrived home after a very satisfying 450km!

Really nice ride Report Knoppie, thanks for sharing.

I presume you didn't have a quick dip in the lake to cool off
How can I be lost if I've got nowhere to go?

It was flippen hot yesterday and I wanted to go for a dip at Sandy Beach, but getting all the bike kit off and on again seemed like a lot of effort, so I rater just sat and drank beer!

You can actually swim in the lake at Sandy Beach, I was there last year and we swam the whole morning!

Sheesh I wasn't being serious with my swimming comment, thought the place would have been crawling with crocs  :o

The only place at kariba that I ever dare swim is out in the middle off a houseboat.

And I've been told that even that isn't 100% safe.

I have been in Zambia a week a month for the last 23 years
I am always surprised not to see any Dual purpose bikes up there
There is a load of country side that is great for Adv riding and this is in any direction

As regards Kariba I think the Zambians have eaten most of the crocs on the Zambian side
You just go to the islands on the Zimbabwe side just off S iavonga and shine a torch on the water late at night and you see so many sets of eyes that you understand why they say that Kariba has a croc per meter of shoreline

Lekker Adriaan!
