DR650 oil drain plug
« on: March 15, 2015, 06:20:57 pm »
Did a oil and filter change today.

The oil was clean, as was the filter.

I was cleaning the oil plug with a rag when the tip moved. Upon closer inspection it turns out to be a magnetic disk attached to the bottom of the plug.

Did not strike me as the cleverest of designs as there is a danger that it can come off.

Is this OEM Suzuki, or the previous owner making a DIY magnetic drain plug?

Het ook so gedink, so ek het die plug terug gesit sonder die magnetiese disk.

Gebruik Actevo 4T 10W40.

R80.00 per litre :o

Ek gebruik Bel Ray ELP 20W50. Effens duurder.

Throw away the magnet. Non OEM.

Sump plug magnets are not a very effective way of filtering your oil since they are not in the oil stream but only have some oil sloshing past them. Big stuff (like an NSU screw) which might damage your oil pump is stopped by the intake screen. Tiny stuff goes through the screen and pump and is stopped by the filter.

While at it pry off the rather useless and IMHO dangerous sump plug crush washer too. Rather get a box full of aluminium crush washers and replace at every oil change.

Thanks LeCap, I did throw it away and did not refit.

Will follow the suggestion on the aluminium crush washer :thumleft:
