Easiest way to see operating steam trains operating is to come out to Magaliesburg station next Saturday the 21st. Reef Steamers does a trip from Park Station to Magalies and the train stands in Magalies Station from about 11am to 2pm. There's a market as well selling food and knick knacks. More info here : https://www.facebook.com/Magaliesstation

Apparently next week they are going to have 2 steam locos on one train, should be interesting. While they are standing there you can get in the engine and have a look at all of the brassoed pressure gauges etc..

Directions : Go to Magaliesburg on the R24. Turn left and go past the Spar and Supakwik. Keep going straight until the road turns right and the  entrance to the station is on your left. If you go straight on the little dirt road from here you will cross the railway tracks and can park in the market/picnic area.

Further to this, the reason they are running with 2 locos is that one of them needs to be run in:

DOUBLE HEADER:

As many will know by now, we are running a double-header train to Magaliesburg on Saturday this weekend with 12AR 1535 ‘Susan’ and 15F 3046 ‘Janine’ running in tandem.  The 15F 3046 has just had a replacement main driver axle installed, which also meant that the main axle boxes had to be bored-out to suit the new wider journals on the axle, and a full set of new bushes were fabricated and fitted to the crank pins and big ends on both sides.

She was fired up and given a test run around the yard on Saturday and got to do some shunting as well.  All looks good so far.  But J9 needs a jolly good run on the main line for a test – and 12AR Susie is coming along as a spare in the unlikely event that something goes drastically wrong.

To provide a decent test load for the 15F to pull, we are taking along quite a few extra coaches to make up a long, heavy train.

Bump for people looking for an excuse to ride out to the country tomorrow....

There's no entry fee or anything, just pitch up at Magaliesburg Station.

Steam locos are great photo opportunities, pity it's so far from me. A trip over the Sneeuberg would give it a good workout though?
