WC BASH TANKWA 2015 - One Hell of a ride

Somehow you see these rides appear on the planning a ride threads and always start of thinking of reasons why you cannot make it for such and such a date.   :-\
I only decided to go about three weeks before the Bash.  Once I decided to go I planned a trip that would leave a grin for weeks to come. ;)
The night before the route was planned and loaded, the kit ready and bike full, then the heavens opened up and we had RAIN.

Thursday morning I awoke to the smell of freedom this was it – Day 1 of many

I left Colesberg and set off for Richmond. At Richmond I turned off onto the Victoria West road.

I enjoyed every minute of those long open sections

IMG_2959 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_2967 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Along the way I saw this HUGE tortoise and could not help taking a picture of it, thinking this usually means rain...
IMG_2964 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_2965 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

At some small siding I took these pictures of the old fort – must have been an important junction at some point in history

IMG_2968 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_2969 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

As I drove into Vic West I noticed my side stand spring took a hit and was hanging loosely – thinking of replacing it I stopped at the first place that looked the part. In true Karoo style plenty of pliers but no spring – it would just need to last. :thumleft:

IMG_2982 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

From Vic West I headed to Loxton.   In the middle of nowhere I found this “tower” would love to know what this is for – fire lookout?   Couldn’t help wonder what this structure would have cost at Nkandla.

IMG_2986 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

This was a nice road with some driffies and tight turns ;D

IMG_2991 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Arriving at Loxton I filled up at the Koop wit probably the friendliest pump attendant I have ever met.  I asked him what is Loxton know for....  His answer “Tiki en Selma”

IMG_2995 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Beautiful church in Loxton

IMG_2994 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I left for Fraserburg – long open sections, I made good time.

IMG_2996 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Fraserburg (as on a previous RR) remains a clean well kept town, while filling up I chatted to one of the farmers and decided not to take the R356 to Sutherland but rather the Rantepad running just South of it.

IMG_3001 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_2958 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

As the open sections so far had me making up time I was game for it.

This turned out to be a GREAT decision.  At one point the road seemed familiar – couple of years back I had joined it riding toward Carnarvon.

IMG_3017 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I reached Jupiter in Sutherland at about half past five.  What a day....

IMG_3020 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Thanks to Theo we spent some time looking at different roads to get to the bash, my idée was to go Middelpos Gannaga again – Theo talked me into Oubergpass, that screwed up  my route completely. However I was game for it.

Again Hooglander your place was great, glad I made it to you.
I was for the first time in my biking life I was not in a hurry Friday morning.  I decided to take in the town on foot.

Ostriches are to Sutherland what dogs are to Jhb.
IMG_3028 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Across from Theo’s place some Africaburn guys were building their structure.

IMG_3024 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3038 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I could not help wonder how fresh is fresh in Sutherland...

IMG_3040 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

After a nice breakfast I got ready to leave
After all was packed and ATGATT on I found the HP would not start. And keep in mind the Molopo trip I had the starter overhauled.  Solenoid......  After some persuasion I was underway.

IMG_3042 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3044 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3047 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Oubergpas as well as the road leading to it was a GEM, what a ride.

IMG_3050 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

IMG_3055 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3057 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3059 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I love a nice entrance to a farm

IMG_3049 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

After the pass I went via Bo-Wadrif and Onder-Wadrift and then went via Tankwa Guesthouse to Stonehenge.

IMG_3062 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3063 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Open question – dear Mr. President: “How do you farm on  12000ha of this? :deal:

IMG_3066 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

IMG_3082 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3083 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3086 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Now laugh your asses off – because I ended up taking Oubergpass I cancelled the waypoint to the tented camp. So I got to Stonehenge and stopped took some pictures and hit the road....

IMG_3087 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

When I hit the R355 I just thought bugger it drive down to the Padstal and then later head back.  Luckily I ran into Chucky and he showed me the error of my ways....

IMG_3090 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Arriving there first was not what I had intended but Henk soon made me realize I had to start taking it s l o w.  Wasn’t long before we realized we knew a common friend.  Was nice to meet the old friends again and see new faces.

The night was filled with tales of punctures and how lost one could get inside the Tankwa Padstal getting here. For some it took like hours to get out of the yard.... :spitcoffee: :spitcoffee:

Although after seeing Jan’s photo in the RR, It might have been some incentives that were dropped by Rassie.  :imaposer: :imaposer: :imaposer:
Look where others use bashes to let just say..... flood the livers, I tend to eat to much.  Henk the spare ribs were amazing.

After a long night (I actually woke up when the music died at about 02:30) I woke up to drizzle on my tent.  My idea had been to hit the road the Saturday and visit my brothers in Riebeeck West, if arrangements hadn’t been made I would have stayed.
After battling the damn solenoid again I went and said my goodbyes and thanked Henk and off I went.
Just FYI names like Dikgeluk is only appropriate after you actually meet the person.   :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

IMG_3121 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I was sad to mis out on what was to be a memorable Saturday in the Tankwa. :-\
The heavens were pouring down till about 30km from the padstal.

IMG_3127 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3131 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I had time so decided to see what it looked like after the rebuild, Stoetie and gang were there already making sure the next building’s deposit was being made.

IMG_3137 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3138 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

After some light conversation I hit the road to Ceres. I could however not believe it all three the KTM’s standing there had solenoid problems as well....   :pot: :lamer:

IMG_3140 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3141 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Mental note Ceres on a Saturday is a NO – NO

IMG_3143 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I got to Riebeeck West hitting as much dirt as possible – what scenery.

IMG_3144 (Medium) by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3145 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I heard about my brother’s boy while close to Noenieput on the Molopo Bash so was appropriate to see him for the first time on the WC Bash.

IMG_3158 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3188 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Sunday was a slow starter as well, I was supposed to meet Heimer  + 1 at Touwsriver and from there down to Veldbrand.  I filled up at the BP and wen I texted Heimer they were already having lunch there.  Walking out I ran into Frannarossi and co.

IMG_3191 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

After saying our goodbyes we hit the road to Veldtie.  Heimer , Martina and me.

The weather chased us but all in all not bad at all.

We reached Koedoeskloof just as I realy wanted to hit the road.  Best decision of the day.

IMG_3209 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3211 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

What a nice place, clean and very well laid out.  During the “kuier” that night Eugene again suggested I take some roads different to what I had in mind the day before. :thumleft: :thumleft:

IMG_3219 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

I just hoped the rain that was by now covering most of the country gave me a chance to do the Hel the next day.

On every trip you get that life wisedom you can take with you – Heimer your comment on how to pack was spot on. :pot: ;) ;D
After probably the laziest evening of my life I hit the bed.
Monday morning in all aspects turned out to be perfect apart from the damn solenoid again. Overcast and fresh.  I had an awesome breakfast and hit the road while my companions from the previous day were shifting sleeping gears to 4th. :pot:

The weather was ominous and made me think twice before going into the Hel. :-

Was to be honest not the best ride of my trip but I enjoyed it, the last drop section certainly gives you a buzz if you suffer from vertigo.

I basically turned down at the river and had a Coke and hit the road again – the weather was turning BAD. :P

I reached Prince Albert just as the heavens really opened up, I found lodging and hit the shower. Just then the power went off for the night... :imaposer:

IMG_3318 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Prince Albert is turning into a real Atrsy town now.
From news where I had dinner I gathered Meiringspoort was closed and the roads were in bad shape Beaufort West way. Hence on Tuesday morning I hit the tar to the N12 and came up via the N1.

IMG_3326 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr
IMG_3328 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Along the way encountering RAIN and some stages hail as well

The Hp was heavy on fuel during this section.

IMG_3330 by jeannimmo27, on Flickr

Reached home by lunch on Tuesday
2156km of sheer bliss  ;D :thumleft:

Thanks to the organizers it was worth it

Awesome route and photos!!!

Van my familie is op Bo-wadrif begrawe. Die eienaar van Tankwa Gasteplaas ry self 'n KTM as hy in die land is. En my ouma het grootgeword op Waatlemoensfontein. Deesdae Isle of SKye. Sjoe verlang nou sommer terug na daai wereld!
