The Moths Motorcycle Association would like to invite all bikers and other interested people to meet Dave Barr and 2 friends from the US at the Killarney Clubhouse from 17:00. Dave will give one of his inspirational talks at 18:30, based on his life experiences.
Bar will be open, DJ Dodge will be providing the music and Curry and Rice will be on sale. The upstairs restaurant will also be open.
Voluntary donations at the door in aid of Dave's charities, Cheshire Homes and The Quad-Para Association of SA. Come and meet and speak to this legend.

This year’s tour will kick off at the Ann Harding Cheshire Home in Randburg on the 15th of April, and end off after about 6000km around South Africa at the Soweto Cheshire Home on the 1st of May.

Who is Dave Barr?
The very, very short version:
Dave Barr is a double-amputee who rode a 1972 Harley Davidson 1200 Ironhead Sportster for 83 000miles (135 000km) around the world. Dave rode around Southern Africa in 1989, and from 1990 – 1994 completed his epic journey unsupported and unassisted through swamps, desert sand, snow, ice, driving rain, scorching sun, mud…
Dave Barr is the author of two books, “Riding the Edge” and “Riding the Ice” both well worth reading.
Why is Dave touring South Africa?
Dave is riding to promote awareness for two worthy organizations: The Leonard Cheshire Foundation and QuadPara Association of South Africa.
The very short version:
Dave Barr is an American with South African citizenship, who through a number of life choices became Col Breytenbach’s gunner in 32 Battalion.
On 29 August 1981, deep in Angola, their light armoured vehicle triggered an anti-tank mine, which caused Dave to lose both his legs in Pretoria’s old 1 Military Hospital.
One leg he lost above the knee, one above the knee, he also lost a lot of sight in one eye and the hearing in one ear.
After his recovery, he went back to active duty at the border, training the 44 Parachute Brigade, but eventually his contract was up, and he had to go back to the United States.
South Africa’s army appreciated that Dave was tough as old boots and his disabilities didn’t make him less of a man, but the rest of the world does not seem to agree. Dave had been a professional soldier almost all his life, fighting hard for causes he believed in, but he had now lost his purpose along with his legs…
That was until his dad helped him back into the saddle of his old 1972 Harley Davidson 1200 Ironhead Sportster. From that moment on, he had new purpose. He was going to ride this motorbike around the world in aid of awareness for physically disabled people.
Off course, when Dave started telling people about this dream, their faces clearly said that they thought he had lost the last few marbles he had… but then again, this is Dave Barr. Those privileged enough to know him, knows that if there is one person on earth who could do this, its him.
Dave is one of those very rare, completely real people, with more humbleness than what is comprehensible. What he did, how he did it, his tale of spirit, tenacity and pure chutzpah is well worth sharing.
Dave rode his beloved Harley over 83 000 miles (135 000km) unassisted around the world. This with what is arguably the most inappropriate motorbike for this purpose anyone can think of.
This epic adventure started in South Africa on 17 October 1989. With the help of few friends who sponsored him, he proved he could do it by riding right around Southern Africa.
Just under a year later in 1990, his world-wide journey began. This time it was with far too little money or sponsorship to make it feasible, but nothing was going to stop him. He had new purpose and plenty of perseverance.
