Which lithium batteries on a 450?
« on: April 22, 2015, 06:59:12 am »
My battery is going to need replacement before Amageza and I'm half looking at the lithiums. Love the idea of saving 2kg that high up on the bike, but dear god they are expensive now. There's the Ultrabatt from Bikegear which looks pretty good - I think many of the Euro rally bikes use Super B don't they?

Any other ideas?

I have a Ultrabatt in my 35 year old BMW and it swings the engine over just fine. And the original Bosch starters are not known for their efficiency.
Weighs nothing compared to the original battery
They are modular so you make up your own AH as requered

Only thing: They have a fuse in them. I somehow managed to blow one in one of the modules. Bikegear sent me some replacements, quick-quick

Just a note. I tried one of the Shorai Lithium batteries (14ah) and it gave endless problems of not charging or holding much charge for any time, until it just didn't work. Sent it back and replaced with a Gel battery and still have the same one in my 530 from Amageza. I just don't trust the lithium batteries when there is so much at stake like at Amageza.

That's odd... the point of the lithium batteries is that they hold a charge virtually forever and charge up again in a minute time. I know some of the early ones had issues with voltage control and managing charging properly, but thought that was now sorted.

I'm keen to get a lighter, better battery too but reliability is naturally most important. Anyone know which ones they use in the Dakar bikes?

I still believe in a good "wet" battery

I only buy genuine YUASA batteries from Craig's in Maitland and all my bikes sleep on Optimate chargers when not in use

I get 5 years plus out of these batteries - reliability is way more important to me than small weight saving

I know of way more fancy lightweight expensive lithium batteries that have failed compared to traditional wet batteries

It is critical to the battery's longevity that it is being charged correctly - faulty or fried regular rectifiers will often allow 16 plus volts through and this will hurt the battery in no time

Very easy to check - hold a voltmeter over the battery terminals with bike running - optimal charging rate should hover around 13.5 volts
