OK, so is this accurate - unless you are a riding god, use enduro mode. But, even though you are no riding god, use enduro pro when doing technical stuff at slower speeds where you need to have power at all times?

Or, another way, if not a riding god and when doing technical stuff where you need power all the time- enduro mode and switch off traction control???

I agree with you first statement ....

BMW says in the manual , pro mode is for experienced riders with knobly tyres . Enduro is for off road with more road biast tyres.
The abs is also different , in pro , the abs on the back wheel is off. In enduro it allows locking the back wheel but it will interfere if things get out of control.

Yip, so if you're not a riding god, ride in enduro mode, and just every now and then switch off the traction control to practice becoming a riding god so you can use the pro mode one day 😄😉

Not sure riding god has anything to do with it, but you will want to be in enduro pro mode or no traction control at all doing sand as an example.

You can be in Enduro mode and switch the traction control of manually.

Enduro pro does still have TC on but it is very limited. Only kicks in much much later. Lekker for those big drifts.

So this morning I thought I'd check out this enduro pro mode once and for all. We have a nice 2km long stretch of gravel with humps and twists and all, passing by the cement factory just south of Centurion, so I decided to detour to work via this road.

Now I don't know if its the reduced traction, or increased power, or if its just my perception/anticipation that made the difference, but this is a different toy altogether when you make the pro icon show. I could drift effortlessly, spontaneously and with a moerse grin om my face by simply twisting the grip. Normally the bike would just accelerate, but now the acceleration is accompanied by the rear wheel playing around and the revs making a lovely noise.  :ricky:

Approaching the speed humps is now a game... how much air time can I get? While I could do this previously with normal enduro mode it is now just with much more vigour.

OK but seriously, this bike is quite different, and I suspect it is mostly to do with the power that is now delivered unreservedly to the rear wheel, instead of the traction control keeping you in line.

I shall be taking this road again going home, and again tomorrow morning, and again... and again... It's like having a new toy!

Am I correct in saying that, in Enduro pro mode when gripping a handful of front brake the rear will lock up first?

No, if you grab only front brake you will still have ABS front and rear. Only if you use the foot brake is the ABS disabled on the rear.

This is quite true, for me. Whenever I get a new vehicle (not as often as I would like to ) and read the manual it is like an information overload, especially BMW's manuals. They have the normal operational section (how-tos), and then the technical section (why, where, etc) where a lot of things are discussed in more depth.  Once I've gone through that manual my brain feels decidedly mushy. So I enjoy rereading the manual a few months down the line, because then the things that were new in the manual starts making sense and I can relate to what they are saying. And that is when you spot the little things you missed the first time.

I prefer to try things out on the fly, so usually just scan through the manual, and then try the different settings etc out for myself. Therefore I normally miss out on all the finer details  :laughing4:

I've posted this a few times but here goes again:

Must say this is one of the most enjoyable threads I've seen in a long time!! Half the answers are correct and the other half, well let's just leave it at that.

Simply said, in Enduro Mode bike does the thinking for you, in Enduro Pro you have to think for yourself including whether you wish to lock the rear or not.

I only ride Enduro Pro with TC off. This taught me to control the throttle without depending on the computer too much.

Funny that I agree with 2SD about traction!! If you're doing technical trails and hill climbing, switch to Rain mode and switch TC off. The muted throttle response will enable much more control!

Of you have miles of open dirt in front of you and plan to run at 200km/h drifting through corners and tearing up the road, Enduro Pro is your setting.

I crossed over breedtsnek on Sunday, in enduro pro mode. The bike jumped around  a bit over the rocky sections, clearly spinning the back wheel up when I had no traction and lunging the bike forward as soon as the wheel landed again. I must admit it was not easy controlling the bike like this. But I'm putting this down squarly to my lack of skill and offroad experience.

When I did Lesotho last month, I did it in straight forward enduro mode, but with abs disabled. I had a much easier time controlling the bike over the rocks then, and the power did not cut once.

That being said, I get the impression the bike does not simply cut the power when loss of traction is detected, it merely reduces power output. So it's not like an on/off thing, but more like you're closing the throttle just enough to stop the wheelspin.

Anyway, I concur thus that enduro pro mode requires more skill and experience to keep the bike going smoothly forward.

I'll try LKM's suggestion of rain mode for the easier throttle responce, but sith traction control turned off. In fact, I'll use normal enduro mode like this to get used to the traction control aspect, and gradually move to enduro pro mode as I get used to the more dynamic throttle response.

Or I'll just stick to enduro pro and learn the old school way.
