Issues with paying for fuel in Namibia!
« on: May 27, 2015, 07:22:49 pm »
Check this link http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=220917

it all started in Feb this year when the Association of Service Station Owners (ASSO) in Namibia published a notice to service station owners. I've attached the notice below. (the 2nd part of the notice shows first)
The issue is that the cards used are South African and petrol cards, which are being fazed out, have a levy which the card holder pays but, the levy charged on bank cards is borne by the service station owner. They want fuel to be paid for in cash! Now you can imagine how much cash you must carry to fill a cruiser with long range tanks...even a normal cabbie is about R600. They want you to draw cash at the ATM (at most fuel stations) and pay for your fuel.
WTF!! This is where the problem starts. Locals have figured out that any vehicle with SA plates must be carrying CASH and robberies at gunpoint on unsuspecting tourists has escalated and the latest one in a campsite in Luderitz this month was quite violent. Read the thread on 4x4 community and scroll down past all the "sad to hear that, recover soon etc" and all the other incidents start being raised.

already has. My son went to Henties in March/April oblivious of this ruling. I asked him earlier this week whether he had any grief trying to buy fuel with a card and he said that there were some garages that wanted cash. I told him the story and suddenly it made sense to him. Fortunately, he grew up with us going to Nam every year and we always had cash for fuel because there was a 50/50 chance of the line being down when you tried to pay with a card. He had about R5k with him cause his silly 4.0lt V6 Hilux has a long range tank and takes about R1500 to fill.  :eek7:

Ja dis n KAK move, to make it even worse is that you are not guaranteed to be able to withdraw money from the ATM especially in rural places like KoŽs....I've had people swearing and spinning on the forecourt due to this absolutely ridiculous ruling, but hey...it's Africa Rules.

Waarheid! as you know the written/unwritten law in Nam (and Africa) north of us, is to always top up your tank because you never know when you might see fuel again. Got caught like that only once in Khorixas. So fuelling is a big thing in Nam especially with 4 wheels. Somebody was being short sighted here.

I came back from Nam last Friday after a fairly extensive tour.
Most filling stations would not accept Garage Cards, but all were happy to take any credit card.
No problem whatsoever!
Same situation at the stations we stopped at in Botswana on the way back.

interesting! Let's hope it stays that way. Now they must just convince the locals that Credit and Debit cards are being used and SA drivers will not be carrying cash......

If he always tales cash anyway, incase the lines are down, why is an issue to take cash because of these new "regulations"?

The problem is that the banks are getting greedier and greedier.  You get the convenience of using the card, the bank pockets the interest, yet the poor service station owner must pay for the transaction!  Take that Hilux.  R1500 to fill.  Garage owner forks out between R75 and R120 for your convenience.  I can see how Nambian garage owners would object.  Don't crap on them.  Crap on the greedy banks!

We have a tyre shop here. Gives you the price. When paying with a card, they add 10%.
I'm not saying kill stupid people, I'm saying, remove the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out.

that is against the card company's agreement and if they find out they remove their card machine

edit: it is however allowed to have a standard price and give discount for cash
