1980's SA MX
« on: June 17, 2015, 08:32:34 am »
I finally found my box of old MX pics in Joburg. Luckily I also saved a stack of event programmes from 1982 and 3, so I can ID the riders in these photos for the most part. I took them, so I'm not in any....basic logic. The first batch was taken at the 1982 MX National at Back of the Moon. I was happy to see that there are some nice ones, and you can get a good idea of what BOTM looked like.
I forget what camera I used....probably the little Kodak 110 that I'd carried in the army too.

OK the test pic worked, using photobucket for the first time.

And contrary to sentence 2, right away I can't tell what race this was. I think it was 125 Seniors, and that is David Dijkman out front?

Staten passing someone on the top part of the track, return section before the start line. These jumps are not big compared to nowadays, but if you hit them at speed you went for a flight, believe me....my very first race was at BOTM, on a Suzuki RM 465. Learned a few things that day

Russell Campbell again, at the same spot

I think this is Tyrone Stevenson, racing a 250 Honda for some strange reason. He was usually KTM 495 mounted. Looks like his helmet?

This is, according to my saved documents, Jeffrey Bamin on a KX 125 in the 125 senior race. i knew his cousin in bike squad in 1981, and said cousin talked me into buying Jeff's 1980 YZ 125. Learned quite a bit from THAT caper too......A) don't EVER buy a bike from a pro- or expert level racer....well not a privateer anyways ....the bike WILL be trashed! B) don't EVER buy a bike that is set up to run on methanol from a pro- or expert level racer.....for the same reason, not to mention that a 20litre drum of methanol cost R40 even in 1981.....and the shit was seriaasly toxic  :xxbah:

This was 1982. Just figured that out.
Kevin Korkie, Honda CR 125 in the 125 senior race. Good form!

Gary Bergstrom, Honda CR 480

Andrew Trowe, Suzuki RM 125 in the 125 Junior race.

This oke I do remember....David v/d Merwe, knew him from bike squad.....this was definitely 1982

Nice one of Russell Campbell on the Maico 490....NOT

Feckin' old laptop and/or photobucket is acting up....more later.

On closer study of the old racing programmes.....these were taken at the 1982 Back Of The Moon National MX, not 1983. Both Campbell and Staten raced the 250's in 1983.

OK so that's sorted......

I'd show up for VMX if I could, but wekking....far away.

There's a lot to come, found 140 decent pics.

If I'm not mistaken his team mate in the 125 / 250's was Karl Prestwood. The first and only guys in S.A to have had Blue Stratos sponsorship, riding for Kawazaki.
