I remember riding my 50 to Brickor, watching the MX, and also riding the 50 around the track trying to get the jumps like the pro's... broke the shock on my MTX...

Fantastic memories.  :thumleft:

Ok, some more.

Wayne Smith, 125 juniors

Another one of David v/d Merwe, on probably the most beautful bike in those days ;D KTM 495

Can't make out what this was, maybe 100 juniors (or maybe 250's) at the start of the top section at BOTM

Rex Staten on the downhill straight

For some reason I took many of Staten:

Nice one of David Dijkman, 125 seniors....on an RM in Maico paint

Darryl Werner in the 125 senior....the headless rider of the apocalypse

Start of the 500 class, Campbell and Staten out front....basically the story of the year

A squid about to be overtaken by Charlie Tissen, no.200

Tissen done the deed.....

Charlie Bezuidenhout, 125 juniors.....he was the neighbour of one of my mates, their families had a few squabbles over 2-stroke nosie at random hours of the day and night.....as did I with our Dutch neighbour, although my situation could be more accurately described as a low-intensity nuclear war   :lol8:

Charlie Tissen again

More of Rex Staten

Looks like Bezuidenhout, Korkie, Dijkman....but that doesn't make sens, as Bezuidenhout was 125 juniors and the other two in the seniors....maybe they raced them together that day, can't remember

Looks like the start of the 250's

Tissen

Gary Petersen, I believe, 250's

Russell Campbell

Good one of Charlie Tissen

Staten

An oft-repeated scene....

Nice one of Russell

Either Minicross (80cc's) or 100 Juniors, can't tell

Looks like 125's

Campbell

Peter Hills, 125 seniors. I knew Pete well from army days....extremely nice oke, he later raced cars and won the SA Formula V championship a few times

Minicross experts...this class was dominated by Rob Herring and Colin Dugmore during this time, and then they took their battles to the 100 juniors and 125 classes....always some of the best racing of the day

125's looks like, the start straight in the background.....seems so small now

Peter Hills again

No idea who this was, but judging by the number, a gent with beeg ballas cause that looks like a KX 500

More unidentified 125's past the start straight

Good shot of the typical 500 mx race all year....Staten in front, Campbell just behind. Rex Staten single-handedly raised SA mx to the level where okes like Greg Albertyn, who was a minicross support rider in 1982, Tyla Rattray and Grant Langston became World Champs and USA champs.....noticed later that it's my mugu youngest brother looking over Rex's shoulder  :lol8:

That's all the BOTM pics....next Brickor and Syringa, and will scan some programmes as well

After a while my 5-year old laptop can't pull the graphics anymore, it seems.....gets loaded up and confused. Time for a new one.

Will post more later, meanwhile here's a fun game I just discovered....trying to identify all the old cars and bakkies in the background, around the track  :lol8:

Cannot thank you enough - awesome memories.

We just checked on GE and noticed an old track next to some sand quarry - could definitely be the old track

Rex Staten was worth of his Rocket status.  That guy fucked off big time but as time went on the local boys really started catching up.  I can still the 2 stroke fumes and the fresh earth
“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more"

Ag its just so nice seeing this stuff again.   :thumleft:

Keep hoping to see myself in amongst the 125's but clearly I wasn't very notice worthy   I usually was down at 10-12th though :P

Nice one of David Dijkman, 125 seniors....on an RM in Maico paint

As far as I remember that was actually a Honda, not a RM.

I dislocated my shoulder on the 1st corner on that start straight, I think the year before, there was a dog leg at the end of the start straight with two little jumps at an awkward angle and I collided with some guy in the air right after the start.  I landed flat on my face and someone else jumped square onto my back as I was trying to get up - which popped my shoulder.

In fact you have a photo of the exact place

The medic dragged me off by my arm.

My old man drove me all the way through to Edenvale hospital from BOTM - it was a long drive!

Eventually had to go for surgery that same year because after that it kept popping out.

This next batch was taken at the 1982 Camel International race at Brickor. Kinda k@k quality, not sure which camera I used, my Kodak 110 took much better shots than these. Or maybe I was just pissed out of my mind, had just returned from a year in the bush a few days before, so had to make up lost drinking time  ;D

Rider introduction beforehand. Far left in blue with beard is Rex Staten, then Harry Everts, Heinz Kinigadner, unknown KTM rider, Rolf Dieffenbach in Honda kit, I think Darryl Werner in back in yellow with umbrella, then I believe Herbert Schmitz, German 500cc champion, Tony Riddell (tall oke in back),then Peter Hills and un i/d oke in blue far right.

Another one, same cast of characters except 2nd from right in Honda kit is Gary Petersen.

On the start line before first heat

Harry Everts before 1st heat. left of him behind is Heinz Kinigadner and his......PUCH  :lol8:

On the grid. Left to right Everts, Kinigadner, Dieffenbach

Off they go

This would have been the 2nd or 3rd heat, at the end of the start straight on the first lap.

Various race pics, international....as I recall Tyrone Stevenson pulled quite a lead on the 495 KTM every time, usually led the first lap but then crashed out  ;D that's him leading going into the bowl....these two pics were taken from the same spot, just opposite sides of the track....TS in the lead in both, so must have been heats 2 and 3 cause I was at the start for heat one.

Two fairly decent shots of Tony Riddell

Tyrone Stevenson KTM 495

General view, start gate was at the right, the bowl was behind the tower

Dirt nap time....enduro class race

K@k shot of Harry Everts, but it's obvious he's not sightseeing

Probably the best shot of the day, Heinz Kinigadner ahead of Tony Riddell, heading to the left turn into the bowl

Decent one of Everts....this is from the same spot as the previous shot, if you look closely in the one above you can see Riddell just landed off a jump...this one

Not sure if this was Russell Campbell, looks like a 250 Maico by the number

Another one of Tyrone Stevenson, off the big jump just before the left turn that lead onto the start straight again

Start of the Enduro class race.....no.602 was Tony le Roux, usually beat all-comers on his IT 175

The track was a bit overwatered for the enduro race, and the left turn into the bowl looked like black cotton soil....lotsa laughs there that day

Enduro race, I believe this was Gary Keyser, knew him from the army....big name in offroad then, also good at MX on his Honda XR500, needless to say, it wasn't stock  ;D

I believe this was my mate and racing partner Graham Goodwin, on his Maico 490....support race

Nice shot of the start straight, and the jump halfway down it. I don't remember this jump being this big....
it claimed the life of Neil Johnson from Cape Town in March or April 1981....he was in bike squad with me, very nice oke, very excited to race in TVL...he crashed over this at the start of a race and several bikes ran over him, he died in hospital 4 days later.
