Living with a 2014 Versys 650, mods and logs.
« on: July 10, 2015, 11:10:22 am »
So I bought a 2014 model from Suzuki South a month ago, this bike is a bit more viby than my previous buttery WeeStrom but the amount of power available from low down is equal and it comes in lower and smoother than the Strom, which makes this the perfect step-up from s single.
Why don't Kawa have this in a dual yet I don't know.
My Vers is still stock and like all boys with new toys it needs to be tweeked. PC5 and Autotune together with a Yoshi is apparently the way to uncork the midrange torque from 4000rpm insteed of the standard 6000. Having 90% of your torque available at 4k gives this motor much more drive than anything in this class, well that's the experience anyway from the USA tuners.
Me being me and never happy with the available aftermarket goodies are looking at the following :
Getting rid of the stock under slung exhaust muffler.
Adding freeflow underslung box with twin outlet.
Reroute twin outlet to one either side of the bike and finishing it off with a GP style canister attached to the passenger foot peg mountings but sort of like the Dakar racers side pipes, I love that under and up look and also the double side TL/TRX look.
The mid pipe and connector pipes assembly I can do myself plus assembly.
Then it will be off to the dyno to get it fueled correctly to match the new setup.
Lets see what comes out of this experiment.

Notice the dip between 4500-6000, PCV and Autotune combo apparently makes a straighter line from 4000-7000. It overides the stock settings for emissions testing which is also tested in that rev range?? :snorting:

The new 2015 Versys has 5bhp more than the 2014 model. I would like to know how to wake up that that extra ponies on the 2014.

Versys15 runs same cam and compression as 650R and ER6, no more torque just more revs than 14.

Kilroy I am between 2 minds, the 2014 looks very cocky with that staged lenses but I also like the 'Ninja look' but still having the versatility of the bike.......but maybe you right. It is a bulletproof design tough, great bike and value for money

The 2014 and 2015 motors is identical mechanically except for two things:
1. 2014 have smoother profiled camshafts which allows for more midrange torque but also causes lower compression and lower top end output. In 2015 the Versys has same cam profile as the Ninja650R.
2. 2015 has new rubber engine mounts to combat vibes to pegs and bars.

Power Commander Fuel Controller has been ordered and should be with me in the next 40days.
Mufflers has been ordered and should be here in 20-30days. That gives me 10-20days to get the mid pipes manufactured. Watch this space...

It is going to look stunning. Just please explain, are you going to remove the complete can/cat combo and then route each exaust header direct to it's own can, or are the going into a box first and then out? And what do you do with the Lamba sensor?

New mid pipe connected to standard headers with O2 bung weld into new mid pipe in standard position, small power bomb thickening just before Y split to two canisters.

Here is the dream, with Kayaba 48mm front and R1 rear shock to extend travel both ends.

Looks serious, and I am sure more guys will follow your example of building that exaust. I understand how you will split it now wirt regards to the sensor etc, and it is going to sound vtwin'sh ( if there is such a word  :imaposer:)

Hi guys, yes, I'm busy with the mid pipes. Made of a mix of 316 and 304 stainless with a O2 sensor rite after the header end then a 51-63-51 power bomb then the Ysplit to the two hexagon mufflers. The mufflers have arrived from overseas but still waiting for the Power Commander from Clubhouse Kawasaki, I payed more than 30days ago, they are not replying to emails and I am fed up calling after the
