Windhoek
« on: July 14, 2015, 04:07:09 pm »
I'm hatching a plan that revolves around attending the Namibian air show on 1 August. The last time I visited Namibia I was about as tall as the air intake is high on an XR, i.e. pre-school.

The plan:
Day 1: drive (yup ... taking the box for this too much camera gear for a bike) to the border and overnight somewhere just inside Namibia
Day 2: drive to Windhoek, overnight
Day 3: air show
Day 4: Windhoek to likely Springbok (or thereabouts)
Day 5: drive home

Any suggestions for cheep-cheep accommodation along the way? Really just need a safe place to shower and crash?
What's the deal with roaming (Vodacom) in Namibia? Expensive? Better to get a pay-as-you-go sim card there? Where does one buy that?

Any other useful info?

I take it you are coming from Cape town direction? Would suggest you get to Grunau. Accomodation quite good and not expensive. there are a lot of alternatives such as the White House in the same area but more expensive. Would suggest you get a Nam SIM card and air time. usually available just about anywhere in NAM. Roaming charges with Vodacom prohibitively expensive.

Don't know if you have accommodation in Windhoek yet but if not you can try Afrika Sun. Guest house in Eros/Klein Windhoek area. Basic but ok. Phone Eghardt Visser at +264 811417979. L:et me know if you need any further info or assistance.

Cheers!

Remember from the border it is 810 km toe Windhoek so try and split it in half for your trip up.
Grunau hotel/chalets would be a good halfway stop.

We stayed at Savanna Guest Farm about 40 kms past Grunau. It is about 1 k from the tar road on the left. Another choice in the same area is the White House.
Enjoy the trip.

Sorry for the hijack. Going to a site near Otavi. Flying to Windhoek en then hire car to site.
Some questions - do the shops accept ZAR or should we change to NAM Dollars - do the garages accept ZAR petrol cards ?
Advice will be appreciated  :thumleft:

ZAR is legal tender in Namibia, so no issues there as far as I know (you may be given N$ change though). I know of some recent hiccup re SA fuel cards, so not sure if they are accepted. All ears as this will also pertain to my trip.

No they do not accept fuel cards anymore, cash only.
Yes rands accepted everywhere but you will get dollar in return.
For petrol you can draw little amounts at ATMs instead of having a big amount with you all the time.
