The girlfriend insisted and I had to oblige. Also she  didn't check the weather beforehand. Anyway on Thursday morning we left on our trip. The aim was to go via Clarens to Barberton and then back to Pretoria over the 4 days. The girlfriend has never been on a long bike trip before never mind as a pillion on a KTM 950 :) and we planned on camping.

We went the old faithfull route via Delmas to Viliers on the backroads, my first lesson was that the katoom is a little bit heavier and to blip it over holes in the road is not so easy, but we arrived in Frankfort at 11:00 and went for a quick friend visit with "koek and tee".
From Frankfort we took the gravel road that starts at the Frankfort airport and goes to Tweeling and then to Reitz. We took the turn to Reitz to fillup again and then took tar road to Bethlem. In Bethlem we did another family visit with "Koek en Tee" Filled up with supplies for the evening and left for Clarens we did the tourist thing in this overcrouded dorpie had a beer while waiting for rain to go away and then left for our camping spot at Bokpoort Adventures 5km down the road towards Golden Gate, quite a nice place more for the Horsie people and nature walkers but nice spot. You can buy charcoal and wood their but bring own food, they have a nice pub as well.

That night the wind really made itself known and the big cold started moving in. The next morning we put almost all our clothing on prepared for the cold. We took a gravel road at the back of the Golden Gate Nature reserve, you have to go back past Clarens about 5km and then turn right on the first road after you go over the neck of the mountain. This road travels right along the game reserve fence until you reach the tar road that goes to Kestell from Clarens.

We then aimed for Vryheid, stocked on food and fuel and left decided to see how far we could go, thatâ??s when we passed the Old Station at Wakkerstroom and decided to stay.

The next morning was cold and wet, we left for Barberton going alongside the Swazi border up to just before the Josefsdal borderpost and then down to Barberton, they are busy tarring that road so do it now before it loses its gravel.

From Barberton we took a gravel road aiming for Slaaihoek, but missed the right turnoff and ended in Kaapsehoopfrom there to Waterval Boven, we found a nice little camping site for the rock climbers just past the Elandskrans campsite.

The next day was raining wet and miserable so we took the fastest route missing the Mashado tolgate by turning of just before it and joining just after it again. We took the old road to Pretoria and arrived around 11:30 home.
